University Destinations from Doha

Where Doha graduates go: Education City branch campuses on home soil, the UK Russell Group, US selectives, and what each school publishes.

University Destinations from Doha

The brief

  • Doha is the rare city where a top-flight foreign university is a local commute. Education City hosts Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Northwestern, Texas A&M, Weill Cornell, VCUarts and HEC Paris on one campus, alongside Hamad Bin Khalifa University.
  • The UK and US dominate the published outbound destinations at the largest international schools. Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and East Asia turn up in smaller, recurring volume each year.
  • Doha College and American School of Doha publish the deepest destination histories. Most other schools list a handful of headline names or post nothing.
  • Qatar University absorbs a meaningful share of every cohort, mainly Qatari nationals and a smaller flow of expat students staying for cost or proximity.
  • IB Diploma, A-Levels and AP all route cleanly into Education City admissions. Each branch campus runs its own selective process on top of the qualification.

Education City changes the question

Most destination lists answer which country do graduates leave for? In Doha, a useful share of the answer is they did not leave. Education City, the Qatar Foundation campus on the western edge of the city, hosts seven foreign university branches alongside Hamad Bin Khalifa University.

Branch campusHome institutionMain subject area
Carnegie Mellon QatarCarnegie Mellon, USBusiness, computer science, biology, information systems
Georgetown QatarGeorgetown, USForeign service, international politics, history, economics
Northwestern QatarNorthwestern, USJournalism, communication, media
Texas A&M QatarTexas A&M, USChemical, electrical, mechanical and petroleum engineering
Weill Cornell Medicine QatarCornell, USPre-medicine and medicine (MD)
VCUarts QatarVirginia Commonwealth, USDesign, fashion, interior design, painting and printmaking
HEC Paris in QatarHEC Paris, FranceExecutive and specialised business education
Hamad Bin Khalifa UniversityQatar FoundationPostgraduate research, Islamic studies, law, engineering

Two consequences follow. A Doha student can take an American or French degree without leaving the country, on the same transcript and, in most cases, the same brand on the diploma as the home campus. And the subject shortlist is narrower than a US or UK university menu: engineering means Texas A&M's four streams; medicine means Weill Cornell; humanities means Georgetown or NU-Q. Anyone wanting law, classics, architecture, pure science or the broad UK liberal-arts route still leaves Qatar to study it. Weill Cornell and Carnegie Mellon admit rates track their US parents; Northwestern's journalism programme and Georgetown's foreign service degree draw applicants from across the Gulf.

Where Doha graduates go

The destination spread differs sharply by school.

American School of Doha runs an American programme with AP and IB on top. Graduating-class profiles send the largest share to US universities, with smaller groups to Canada, the UK, the Netherlands and Education City. The IB Diploma average sat near 35 points; the AP Scholar record places graduates from Ivy-equivalents down to large state universities.

Doha College publishes the strongest A-Level results in the city: 2025 figures show *20% A\, 56% A\-A and 81% A\-B, with a 99.4% pass rate. The destination pattern weights to Russell Group universities**: Imperial, UCL, King's, Edinburgh, Bristol, Manchester and Warwick appear repeatedly. A smaller stream goes to US universities, another to the Netherlands (Maastricht, Amsterdam, Erasmus, Leiden) on English-taught routes the British curriculum maps onto cleanly.

Compass International School Doha posts a 2025 IB Diploma average of 34.4 points, a 96% pass rate, a 100% university acceptance rate and USD 8.5 million in scholarship offers across the cohort. Doha British School (Wakra) reports a 2024 IB Diploma average of 38 points, one of the highest in the city, and *52% A\-A at A-Level**.

Qatar Academy Doha, inside Education City itself, runs the full IB continuum and feeds heavily into Education City alongside US and UK universities. ISL Qatar publishes a top IB score of 43 points against a global average of 30, and routes more students into European universities than the city average. Nord Anglia Al Khor publishes the broadest triple: *94% IB pass rate, 33.1 IB Diploma average, 67% A\-B at A-Level, 54% scoring 4 or 5 on AP exams**.

Park House and Sherborne Qatar sit in the British-curriculum tier alongside Doha College: Park House posted a 100% A-Level pass rate and 96% of IGCSE grades at 9 to 7 in 2025; Sherborne 49% top grades at A-Level and 100% IGCSE pass in 2024. Swiss International School Qatar reports 170+ offers across 15+ countries for the class of 2025; SEK Qatar posts a 32-point IB average against the global 30.24.

DPS Modern Indian School sends the bulk of graduates to Indian universities through the CBSE route, with 233 distinctions at Grade XII in 2024 and a 100% pass rate, feeding the standard JEE, NEET and CUET cycle.

Qatar University absorbs the largest national-cohort share, particularly from the bilingual and Arabic-medium schools, plus a smaller share of expat students staying for cost or proximity. It rarely appears on the headline destination lists because British and American schools market outbound destinations, not local retention.

Two caveats. Destination data is patchy across the city. Six or seven schools publish full graduating-class profiles; most publish a list of names without numbers; some publish nothing. Named acceptances are not enrolments. A school listing Harvard, Cambridge and Imperial in its 2025 destinations may mean three students enrolled, or one offer to one student at one of them.

How to read these destinations

A published destination list is not a ranking. It is a marketing document with two purposes: showing that the school's qualification is recognised at strong universities, and reassuring parents that the counselling team has live relationships with admissions offices.

Years of data. A school showing 2020 to 2025 is sharing a track record. A school showing only the current year is sharing a brochure. Doha College, ASD and Compass publish multi-year data; many smaller schools do not.

Cohort size and pass rate alongside the names. A 38-point IB average across 60 students is a different fact from a 38-point average across 8.

Headcount per university. A list naming Cambridge, Imperial and Carnegie Mellon Qatar might mean one student to each, or fifteen to one and a handful across the others. The shape of the cohort matters more than the highlight names.

Distribution across tiers. What share of the class went to a top-50 university? A top-200? The middle of the cohort is the honest signal.

Counselling effort versus intake. Strong results from a selective school reflect the intake. Strong results from a non-selective school reflect the counselling and teaching. A school that names its counsellors, lists when university work begins in the school calendar, and runs applications inside the school day produces different outcomes from a school that hands the work to a third-party agent.

FAQs

Can a Doha student take a full US university degree without leaving Qatar? Yes, at six Education City branch campuses (Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Northwestern, Texas A&M, VCUarts, Weill Cornell), plus HEC Paris for French business education. The diploma is issued by the home institution; subject choice is narrower than the parent campus offers.

Which Doha school sends the most students to UK universities? Doha College has the strongest and longest A-Level profile in the city, with 81% A\*-B in 2025 and a destination pattern weighted to Russell Group universities. Park House, Sherborne Qatar and the Doha British School campuses place into the same UK tier.

Which school is the deepest pipeline into US universities? American School of Doha, on NEASC accreditation, the AP catalogue and US-facing counselling. Compass and Doha British School (Ain Khaled) place IB graduates into competitive US universities alongside it.

IB Diploma or A-Level for Doha graduates? Both feed cleanly into Education City, the UK and the US. A-Level is the most direct route into selective UK admissions; IB is the broader transcript for multi-country applications; AP attached to a US diploma is the most direct route into competitive US admissions.

How important is the school's counselling team? Very. The schools with the deepest Russell Group and Ivy-equivalent records keep specialist UK and US admissions counsellors on staff, run mock interviews, calibrate predicted grades carefully, and hold current relationships with admissions tutors. This is the single biggest factor parents underweight when choosing a senior school in Doha.
