In Brief

NAIS Pudong is the strongest smaller British school in Shanghai for families who want exceptional IB results, genuinely small classes, and a community-feel campus - though its southern Pudong location in Kangqiao means it only makes practical sense if you live on that side of the city.

NAIS Pudong holds a distinctive position in Shanghai's British-curriculum market: it is smaller than both Dulwich Pudong and Wellington, which gives it a noticeably different texture. With around 700 students and an average class size of 15-16, it operates more like a mid-sized British prep school than a large international brand. It was the first British school to open in China - in 2002, as the British International School Shanghai - and that history shows in the community. Families mention staying for five, seven, ten years rather than rotating through every two or three.

Academic results are the headline. The 2025 IB Diploma cohort averaged 37 points, well above the global average of 30.58, and 50 per cent of students scored between 40 and 45 - the range required for the world's most competitive universities. At IGCSE, more than two-thirds of students take A or A* grades. The school's collaboration with MIT, Juilliard, and UNICEF adds real enrichment: students have visited MIT for maker projects and worked with Juilliard-affiliated music specialists on campus. Class sizes and the 9:1 pupil-teacher ratio mean these programmes reach most students rather than a small cohort.

The location is the honest trade-off. NAIS Pudong sits in Kangqiao, the southern section of Pudong near the Disney resort area - not where most foreign families live. Families in Jinqiao, Century Park, or Puxi face a meaningful daily commute. The campus itself is purpose-built and well-equipped (300-seat performing arts centre, MIT Maker Space, 25-metre pool), but you're choosing between smaller-school quality and a less convenient location.

What parents value
  • IB average of 37 and 50% of students scoring 40-45 points (2025). One of the strongest IB results in Shanghai from a non-selective school. The small cohort size means these are real numbers, not statistical outliers.
  • Average class size of 15-16 across the school, and 1:4 ratios in Early Years. At this size, pastoral care is genuine - families consistently mention teachers who know their children's personalities and learning styles within weeks.
  • MIT, Juilliard, and UNICEF collaborations bring specialists onto campus and send students to MIT for project weeks. These aren't brochure partnerships - families describe Juilliard music sessions and maker projects as genuinely integrated into the timetable.
Points of consideration
  • Kangqiao is far south in Pudong, near the Disney resort. Unless you live in the immediate area - Sunflower City, Cambridge Forest New Town, or nearby compounds - the daily commute will add 30-50 minutes each way for most families in Shanghai's main international districts.
  • Smaller school means a smaller peer group at each year level, particularly in senior school. IB cohort sizes are modest, which suits some students and is constraining for others who want a wider social pool.
  • Fees sit at the premium end of the British market in Shanghai. The one-time RMB 16,000 capital levy and RMB 7,500 in application and registration fees are on top of tuition, which itself reaches RMB 385,090 at IB level.
