Best Secondary Schools in Singapore
Singapore's strongest international secondary schools. World-leading IB Diploma results, Tanglin's A-Level route, and the MOE-stream IB option.
The brief
- Strongest international IB DP: Tanglin Trust School at 39.1 in 2024, alongside *33% A\/A at A-Level**, the only Singapore school running both routes in parallel.
- The IB-only anchors: UWCSEA Dover and UWCSEA East at 36.4 in 2025, the longest-running IB operation in the city.
- The American benchmark: Singapore American School AP mean 4.38 in 2025, 98% at 3-5, AP run at US-private-school scale.
- The MOE-stream IB option: ACS (Independent) at 41.2 in 2024, the city's highest IB DP average, behind a foreign-passport quota and fee-tier gate.
- Fees at the top are compressed. Senior years at Tanglin, Dulwich, UWCSEA, NLCS, Stamford American, SAS and AIS sit between SGD 39,000 and SGD 58,000. Curriculum, sixth-form route, campus and waitlist move the decision, not price.
Singapore is the world's strongest secondary IB market. The 2024 global IB Diploma average was 30.32. Top Singapore international schools sit between 35 and 39; MOE-stream Singaporean schools sit between 41 and 42. The regulatory floor is high and the cohorts are competitive.
The IB Diploma is the default sixth-form exit at almost every credible school. Tanglin is the rare exception that runs A-Level and IB DP in parallel; SAS is the AP-only outlier; Dover Court carries A-Level, IB DP, AP and BTEC. The MOE-stream IB route at ACS (Independent), Hwa Chong and SJI runs at very different fee tiers for citizens, PRs and international students. Every private school is CPE-registered with SkillsFuture Singapore; credible operators hold EduTrust certification.
A move at 14 is harder than a move at 8. IGCSE preparation starts in Year 9, MYP eAssessment runs in Year 11, and most sixth-form routes are locked at Year 11 entry.
The top tier
Tanglin Trust School

Portsdown Road. Ages 3 to 18. Founded 1925. BSO-inspected 2022 and 2025. HMC member. Around 2,900 pupils. Head: Craig Considine.
Tanglin is the oldest British school in Southeast Asia, and the Senior School posts the city's strongest international IB DP result: 39.1 in 2024. The Senior School runs A-Level and IB Diploma in parallel, with families choosing route at the end of Year 11. A-Level *33% A\/A, 87% A\-B, 97% A\-C**.
HMC membership is the signal that matters at sixth form: Tanglin is the only school in Singapore where the head sits in the same conference as the heads of Eton, Winchester and St Paul's. The Sixth Form is large enough to staff genuine breadth, with 25-plus A-Level subjects and the full IB Diploma offer.
The waitlist is the constraint. Year 7 to Year 9 entry is competitive and depends on cohort attrition. Year 12 sometimes opens with sixth-form arrivals.
UWCSEA Dover and East

Dover Road (Dover) and Tampines (East). Ages 4 to 18. Dover founded 1971, East 2008. CIS and WASC accredited. Around 3,000 pupils per campus.
UWCSEA is the longest-running IB Diploma operation in Singapore. Both campuses run the same offer: 2025 IB DP 36.4, pass rate 98.7%. The High School runs the IB Diploma only, no A-Level alternative. CAS and service-learning are embedded from primary, not bolted onto sixth form.
Dover waitlists are among the longest in the city. East clears faster and is the natural pick for families east of the centre. G10 to G12 at Dover are effectively closed in some years.
Dulwich College Singapore

Bukit Batok West Avenue. Ages 2 to 18. Founded 2014. CIS, WASC, BSO, COBIS fully accredited. Around 2,700 pupils. Head: David Ingram.
Dulwich Singapore carries the strongest accreditation stack in the city: CIS, WASC, BSO and COBIS, plus recurring ISI inspection. 2025 results: *IB Diploma 37.1, 100% pass rate, IGCSE 74% A\/A**.
The Senior School runs IGCSE at 16 then IB Diploma at sixth form, the inverse of Tanglin's emphasis. A Cambridge A-Level option sits alongside. Senior facilities match flagship UK independent schools. The Singapore campus operates at flagship-overseas scale; the published outcomes and accreditation stack do the work the name cannot.
North London Collegiate School Singapore

Depot Road. Ages 3 to 18. Founded 2020. CIS accredited, COBIS accredited member. Around 1,400 pupils. Head: Paul Friend.
NLCS Singapore is the youngest top-tier school and already inside the established band: IB Diploma 36.52 in 2024, 20% at 40+ points, highest score 43. The Senior School is IB-only, no A-Level alternative. The UK parent is one of England's strongest academic girls' schools; the Singapore campus is co-educational from early years to sixth form with a STEAM emphasis.
NLCS Singapore is earlier in its operational cycle than Tanglin, UWCSEA or Dulwich. The multi-cohort track record is still forming.
Singapore American School

Woodlands Drive. Ages 2 to 18. Founded 1956. WASC-accredited on a 6-year term. Around 4,100 pupils. Head: Tom Boasberg.
SAS is one of the largest American international schools anywhere. 2025 AP cohort: mean 4.38, 85% at 4-5, 98% at 3-5. SAT class-of-2025 middle 50%: EBRW 640-750, Math 660-780, total 1310-1510. The High School runs AP at depth: AP Capstone, multi-section sciences, 25-plus AP subjects.
SAS is not an IB school at any age. The exit is the US high school diploma with AP. Woodlands in the far north reshapes housing decisions more than any other Singapore school; the commute from Bukit Timah, the CBD or the East Coast is 45 to 75 minutes.
Stamford American International School

Woodleigh Lane. Ages 1 to 18. Founded 2009. WASC full; CIS re-accredited 2021. Around 3,000 pupils. Head: Matt Mills.
Stamford is the full IB continuum school in American operating culture: PYP, MYP, IB Diploma, with AP alongside the IB Diploma at sixth form. 2023 IB Diploma 34.2, 2024 pass rate 97%, AP mean 3.5. Operator: Cognita. The senior school is the only Singapore school running IB Diploma and AP in parallel inside an American culture, with US-trained leadership and US-style college counselling.
Strong mid-tier
Below the top six the field broadens. Credible operators at lower fees, on different operating cultures, or at smaller scale.
- Australian International School. Lorong Chuan, founded 1993, around 2,700 pupils. Australian curriculum through Year 10 then IB Diploma or HSC. 2025 IB DP 34.9, 41% Bilingual Diploma, ATAR average 85. January-to-December calendar.
- Canadian International School. Lakeside and Tanjong Katong. Founded 1990, WASC, Cognia. Full IB continuum across two campuses. 2025 IB Diploma 35. Bilingual Chinese-English programme.
- Dover Court International School. Dover Road, CIS re-accredited 2025, WASC, around 1,900 pupils. The Nord Anglia option, with the broadest sixth-form offer in the city: IB DP, A-Level, AP and BTEC. 2025: *IB DP 35, IGCSE 90.2% A\-C, A-Level 67% A\-B, AP mean 3.6*.
- Overseas Family School. Pasir Ris, founded 1991, WASC. 2025 IB Diploma 35, 94% pass rate. MYP, IB DP and Cambridge A-Level at sixth form.
- German European School Singapore. Dairy Farm Lane, founded 1971, CIS, WASC. Abitur track alongside the full IB continuum. 2025 IB DP 34.6, 100% pass rate, top score 45.
- Hwa Chong International. CPE-registered wing of Hwa Chong, CIS, single fee tier. 2025 IB DP 38.3, 46.4% at 40+ points - the highest mid-tier average in the city.
- Nexus, XCL, Chatsworth, ISS. All IB continuum or IB DP at lower price points. 2024-2025 IB DP averages between 34.3 and 35.1.
Best for A-Levels
A-Levels are not the default in Singapore international schools. The schools that genuinely run A-Levels as a first-class pathway are a short list.
| School | Sixth-form routes | 2024-2025 headline |
|---|---|---|
| Tanglin Trust | A-Level + IB DP | A-Level 33% A\*/A; IB DP 39.1 |
| Dulwich College Singapore | IB DP primary; Cambridge A-Level option | IB DP 37.1; IGCSE 74% A\*/A |
| Dover Court | A-Level + IB DP + AP + BTEC | A-Level 67% A\*-B; IB DP 35 |
| Brighton College Singapore | A-Level (rolling out) | A-Level 98% A\*-B (small first cohort) |
| Insworld Institute | A-Level only, ages 12-18 | A-Level 52% A\*/A |
| Westbourne College Singapore | A-Level + IB DP, ages 14-18 | IB DP 44; A-Level 100% A\*/A (very small) |
| Furen International | A-Level only, ages 12-18 | 70% QS Top 30 offers |
Insworld, Westbourne and Furen are sixth-form specialists rather than full through-schools, suited to families arriving for the final two years. Cohort sizes are small enough that headline percentages should be read with that in mind: Westbourne's IB DP 44 sits on a single-digit cohort.
A school running A-Level and IB DP in parallel (Tanglin, Dover Court) lets a family switch closer to the decision point. A school running IB DP only (UWCSEA, NLCS Singapore) has chosen for the family.
Best for IB DP
The IB Diploma is the default sixth-form exit at the majority of Singapore international schools.
| School | IB DP latest | Programmes |
|---|---|---|
| Anglo-Chinese (Independent) | 41.2 (2024) | MOE-stream DP |
| Tanglin Trust | 39.1 (2024) | DP + A-Level |

| Stamford American | 34.2 (2023) | Full continuum + AP |
| Hwa International | 34.0 (2025) | DP |
Every school listed sits above the 30.32 global mean. The top six sit five to eleven points above it.
Best for AP (American)
The American sixth-form field is narrow. SAS is the benchmark; Stamford is the IB-plus-AP hybrid; ICS is the small Christian alternative; Dover Court runs AP alongside A-Level and IB DP.
| School | AP latest | Senior structure |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore American School | Mean 4.38 (2025), 98% at 3-5 | US diploma + AP only |
| International Community School | 91% of exams at 3+, 34% at 5 | US diploma + AP |
| Dover Court | Mean 3.6, 54.2% at 4-5 | AP + A-Level + IB DP + BTEC |
| Stamford American | Mean 3.5 (2023) | AP + IB DP |
SAS is the only school in the city running AP at US-private-school scale, with a college counselling team and SAT cohort reporting to match.

The age labels and exit points
Three overlapping vocabularies; the framework determines the labels.
British secondary runs Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9) and Key Stage 4 (Years 10 to 11) into IGCSE at 16, examined by Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel. Eight to ten subjects typical. The sixth form runs Years 12 to 13 into either A-Level (three or four subjects, depth-focused) or the IB Diploma.
IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) runs ages 11 to 16 across eight subject groups with criterion-referenced school-based assessment and a Personal Project. MYP feeds the IB Diploma Programme at ages 16 to 19: six subjects (three HL, three SL) plus Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, CAS. Graded out of 45 points.
American secondary runs Middle School (Grades 6 to 8) and High School (Grades 9 to 12) into the US high school diploma, with AP courses layered at Grades 11 and 12. AP is subject-by-subject rather than a full curriculum, graded 1 to 5.
MOE-stream IB is a parallel world. ACS (Independent), Hwa Chong (the local school, distinct from Hwa Chong International) and SJI run the IB Diploma under Ministry of Education governance. Singapore citizens pay subsidised local fees; PRs pay higher; international students pay full international rates, often still below international-school equivalents. Foreign-passport admission is capped and competitive.
How to choose between them
SGD 39,000 to SGD 58,000 covers the senior-year range across UWCSEA, Tanglin, Dulwich, NLCS, Stamford, SAS, AIS and Dover Court. Four factors move the call.
Sixth-form route. A-Level as default: Tanglin Trust. IB Diploma as default: UWCSEA, Dulwich, NLCS Singapore. IB plus AP: Stamford American. AP and US transcript: SAS. Widest offer in one school: Dover Court (IB DP, A-Level, AP, BTEC).
Continuum or layered. Full PYP-MYP-DP from early years: UWCSEA, Stamford American, Canadian International, GESS, XCL, SJI International, Chatsworth, ISS. British-style KS3 and KS4 into IGCSE then sixth-form choice: Tanglin, Dulwich, NLCS Singapore, Dover Court, Brighton. American Middle and High into AP: SAS, ICS.
Campus and commute. School-run traffic on the AYE, PIE and ECP is heavier than the map suggests; drive each route in the morning rush before signing a lease. Woodlands (SAS) sits in the far north and reshapes housing more than any other school.
Capacity and waitlists. Tanglin, UWCSEA Dover and NLCS Singapore carry the longest waitlists. UWCSEA East, Dulwich, Stamford and SAS have more capacity. Dover Court has broader-ability admissions and clears faster at senior entry. Year 10 and Year 12 entry are the hardest windows: cohorts are mid-IGCSE or mid-sixth-form, and movement is limited.

FAQs
Which is the best secondary school in Singapore?
By 2024 IB Diploma average, Tanglin Trust at 39.1 is the strongest international-school result and the only Singapore school running A-Level and IB DP in parallel. UWCSEA Dover and East are the IB-only reference schools at 36.4 in 2025 with the longest-running continuum. SAS is the American benchmark with AP mean 4.38. ACS (Independent) at 41.2 posts the city's highest IB DP average under MOE governance.
What is the average IB Diploma score in Singapore?
Top international schools post averages between 34 and 39. MOE-stream Singaporean schools post 41 to 42. The 2024 global IB Diploma average was 30.32.
Which Singapore schools offer A-Levels at sixth form?
Tanglin Trust runs A-Level and IB DP in parallel. Dulwich offers a Cambridge A-Level option alongside the IB Diploma. Dover Court runs A-Level alongside IB DP, AP and BTEC. Brighton College is rolling out an A-Level sixth form. Insworld, Westbourne and Furen are sixth-form A-Level specialists. UWCSEA, NLCS Singapore, Canadian International and Stamford are IB DP only.
Can my child do the IB Diploma at a local Singapore school?
Yes, in principle, at ACS (Independent), Hwa Chong and SJI under MOE governance. Fee gating: international students pay full international rates, higher than the citizen and PR rates but often still lower than international-school equivalents. Quota gating: foreign-passport admission is capped and competitive. The CPE-registered international wings (Hwa Chong International, SJI International, ACS International) avoid both constraints.
Which Singapore school is best for US university admissions?
Singapore American School is the most direct route: WASC-accredited, AP at scale, US-style college counselling, US transcript and GPA. Stamford American is the IB-plus-AP hybrid. US admissions offices also read the IB Diploma and A-Levels fluently: UWCSEA, Tanglin Trust, Dulwich, NLCS Singapore, Canadian International, GESS and Australian International all produce credible US matriculations.
