Best Primary Schools in Bangkok
Bangkok's strongest primary schools: through-school ENC at Patana, Shrewsbury and Harrow; IB PYP at NIST and KIS; American Elementary at ISB.
The brief
- Top of the ENC pile: Bangkok Patana on Sukhumvit 105 and Shrewsbury City at Rama 3 anchor English National Curriculum primary, with Harrow Pre-Prep at Sai Noi the third pillar.
- IB PYP lead: NIST at Sukhumvit 15 runs PYP from age 3 in a full IB continuum. Concordian is the trilingual (English/Mandarin/Thai) alternative.
- American Elementary lead: International School Bangkok at Nichada Thani, the oldest international school in Thailand (1951).
- Geography is two-sided. Sukhumvit 77 (On Nut) and Sukhumvit 105 (Bang Na) carry the bulk of expat primary demand; Nichada Thani sits across the river in Pakkret.
- Nursery and Reception are the wide doors. Year 3 and Year 5 intakes thin out quickly at the established schools.
Bangkok primary is a deep market. Around twenty schools run a credible international primary phase under three frameworks: English EYFS plus Key Stages 1 and 2, the IB Primary Years Programme, and American Elementary. The British schools dominate by count; the American and IB schools dominate by individual scale.
The decision shape is different from secondary. League-table data does not exist for 5-to-11-year-olds. What matters is class size, the named class teacher, outdoor space, the ratio of specialists to generalists, and how the school manages the EYFS-to-Year 1 step. Primary is a people phase: the head of primary and the Year 1 to Year 6 team matter more than the brand on the gate.
Geography is two-sided. Sukhumvit 77, Sukhumvit 105 and Phra Khanong carry the bulk of expat primary demand. Nichada Thani in Pakkret is a self-contained school-and-housing village around ISB. Sai Noi, Don Mueang and Nonthaburi anchor newer through-schools with longer commutes from the centre.
The top tier
The schools that pair scale, a long-standing primary phase, externally inspected outcomes, and a deep specialist-teacher bench.
Bangkok Patana School

Sukhumvit 105 (Bang Na). Ages 2 to 18. 2,300 pupils; primary alone runs to roughly 1,000. CIS re-accredited 2022. Head: Chris Sammons. Founded 1957.
Patana is the oldest international school in Thailand and the largest single-campus primary in Bangkok. EYFS through Year 6 runs as a dedicated primary school with its own head, buildings, and playgrounds. Class sizes 20 to 22 in the early years, easing to 22 to 24 by Year 6. Specialist teaching for music, PE, swimming, library, and Thai starts in Reception. The 940-seat theatre, three orchestras, and the swim centre carry into primary. Top-year fee THB 975,000.
Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, City Campus

Rama 3 (City Campus) for EYFS and Junior; Riverside (Khlong San) takes over for senior years. Ages 2 to 13 at City. CIS accredited. Head: Robert Millar. City opened 2018.
Shrewsbury City was purpose-built to give river-and-Sathorn families a closer-in EYFS and Junior base. The Junior School carries Reception through Year 6; children move to Riverside for Year 7. One of the most academically anchored primary phases in Bangkok. Fees THB 669,600 to 1,208,400, the top of the market.
Harrow International School Bangkok

Sai Noi, north Bangkok (relocated 2021). Ages 2 to 18. ~1,900 pupils. BSO-accredited 2023. Head: James Murphy-O'Connor. Founded 1998.
Harrow splits its lower school into Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2) and Prep (Year 3 to Year 6), each with a dedicated head and buildings on the 90-acre campus. The Harrow house model runs from Year 3. Full-size pitches, an athletics track, and a lake support a serious sport and outdoor programme. The commute is the trade: 45 to 80 minutes from central Bangkok.
NIST International School

Sukhumvit 15, Watthana. Ages 3 to 18. 1,800 pupils. Full continuum IB World School. CIS, NEASC. Head: James Dalziel. Founded 1992 under UN auspices.
NIST is one of two genuine full-continuum IB schools in Bangkok. PYP runs from age 3 through Grade 5, with literacy and numeracy taught inside the units of inquiry. Class sizes 20 to 22. Not-for-profit, with the most internationally diverse primary cohort in the city: 50+ nationalities.
International School Bangkok

Nichada Thani, Pakkret. Ages 3 to 18. ~1,800 pupils. WASC and CIS accredited. Head: Debi Caskey. Founded 1951.
ISB runs an American Elementary from the Early Learning Centre (age 3 to 5) through Grade 5. The largest American-track primary in Thailand. Nichada Thani is a 600-acre walled compound with most expat-friendly housing on site or within walking distance; many primary children cycle or walk. From Sukhumvit, 45 to 75 minutes.
Strong mid-tier
Bangkok Prep

Sukhumvit 77 (On Nut). Ages 2 to 18. 1,700 pupils. CIS / NEASC triple-accredited 2011. Head: Duncan Stonehouse. Founded 2003.
Bangkok Prep runs ENC from EYFS through Year 6 at Sukhumvit 77, inside the expat catchment that Patana and Harrow both fall outside. Top-year fee THB 821,100, a tier below Patana and Shrewsbury.
Regent's, Concordian, KIS, St Andrews
Regent's at Pra Ram 9 runs ENC primary into IB at senior and works for families in Sathorn, Asok, and Phaya Thai. Concordian (Samut Prakan) is the trilingual IB option: every primary child learns English, Mandarin, and Thai daily, with literacy in all three. KIS at Huai Khwang is the smaller, not-for-profit IB primary in central Bangkok, with cohorts of 18 to 22; KIS Reignwood Park is the larger rural sister site. St Andrews Sukhumvit 71 is the Nord Anglia-operated campus, larger and better-resourced (~2,300 pupils); Sukhumvit 107 is independently operated. Both run ENC primary into IB Diploma. The brand is shared; the governance is not.
Best for British (ENC) primary
For the English National Curriculum delivered by UK-trained teachers, EYFS into Key Stages 1 and 2:
- Patana for the largest, longest-established primary in Bangkok.
- Shrewsbury City for a small, academically anchored Junior School.
- Harrow for a Pre-Prep / Prep model on a 90-acre campus.
- Bangkok Prep for central-Sukhumvit ENC primary a step down in fees.
- Brighton KK and Brighton Vibhavadi for newer provision aligned to Brighton UK.
- Wellington at Krungthep Kreetha; King's Bangkok in Ratchada (BSO Outstanding downstream).
- Bromsgrove in Don Mueang for a UK-prep-school feel at smaller scale.
- DBS in Nonthaburi for west-Bangkok families.
Best for IB PYP
For an inquiry-led primary with no external exams and portfolio-led assessment:
- NIST for the full IB continuum and the most established PYP in the city.
- Concordian for trilingual PYP (English, Mandarin, Thai) inside a full IB continuum.
- KIS for a small, not-for-profit PYP in central Bangkok, with KIS Reignwood Park as the larger rural sister site.
- MYIS in Nonthaburi for tight ratios at smaller scale.
The PYP rewards PYP-trained staff; in weaker hands it reads thin.
Best for American Elementary
For Kindergarten through Grade 5 on the American model:
- ISB at Nichada Thani for the largest and longest-established American Elementary, WASC-accredited.
- BASIS Bangkok for the network's subject-specialist model from Kindergarten, with separate teachers for English, mathematics, science, history, art, music, and PE.
- Berkeley at On Nut for a smaller WASC-accredited American primary.
- XCL ASB for an American Elementary in central Sukhumvit.
- VERSO in Samut Prakan for a project-based American primary on a newer campus.

The age labels and frameworks
Three frameworks, three shapes.
The English National Curriculum divides primary into EYFS (Nursery and Reception, ages 2 to 5) and Key Stages 1 and 2 (Year 1 to Year 6, ages 5 to 11). EYFS runs to the Early Learning Goals at the end of Reception; Year 1 onward is a structured curriculum with English, mathematics, science as core. Cambridge International is not an alternative curriculum; it is one of several exam boards (with Pearson Edexcel, AQA, Oxford AQA) that operationalise the ENC at IGCSE and A-Level.
The IB Primary Years Programme runs from age 3 to 12, inquiry-led and transdisciplinary, with no external exams. Six transdisciplinary themes a year (four for younger years); literacy, numeracy, and the disciplines are folded inside the inquiry. Grade 5 produces the PYP Exhibition.
American Elementary follows the US developmental model. Kindergarten (age 5) is the formal start, with Grade 1 to Grade 5 the main phase. Common Core drives literacy and mathematics. BASIS runs a subject-specialist model from Kindergarten; ISB, Berkeley, XCL, and VERSO use homeroom-with-specialists.
How to choose between them
The decision narrows on three axes.
Framework. ENC, IB PYP, or American Elementary differ in classroom design, the role of phonics, and external benchmarks. A child who responds to structure and named lessons fits an ENC Year 2 differently from a PYP inquiry classroom. PYP demands more of the school's staff to deliver well.
Pathway. Several schools run ENC primary into IB Diploma at senior (Patana, Regents, St Andrews). Others run ENC into A-Level (Shrewsbury, Harrow, Bromsgrove, Wellington, King's, Bangkok Prep, Brighton, DBS). ISB runs American Elementary into a senior school offering AP and IB DP. Switching schools at Year 7 is socially expensive; families who start on the right pathway from Reception save themselves that trade.
Commute. Bangkok is a one-hour city. A school 12 km away can be 25 minutes or 80 minutes. Sukhumvit 77, 105 and 15 work for families on the BTS Sukhumvit line. Shrewsbury City and the riverfront suit Sathorn, Bang Rak, and Khlong San. Harrow, Bromsgrove, and DBS suit north-of-Bangkok families. ISB at Nichada Thani is its own self-contained world.
A fourth, quieter axis: the head of primary. Heads of primary turn over more often than heads of school. The question is who is leading the phase next year and the year after.

FAQs
What age does primary start in Bangkok?
Reception (ENC) and Kindergarten (American) start at age 5. The IB PYP starts at age 3. Most through-schools take children from age 2 (Patana, Shrewsbury, Harrow, Bangkok Prep, Brighton) or age 3 (NIST, ISB, KIS, Concordian). Nursery and Reception are the widest entry doors.
Which is the best primary school in Bangkok?
Within ENC primary, Patana is the deepest and longest-established phase, Shrewsbury City the most academically anchored, and Harrow carries the Pre-Prep / Prep model on a 90-acre campus. Within IB PYP, NIST leads on track record and cohort diversity. Within American Elementary, ISB is the default choice.
How early do I need to apply for primary?
For the top through-schools, 12 to 18 months before the preferred start date is the realistic window. ISB and Patana carry the longest queues for Year 1 and Year 3. Smaller schools (Bromsgrove, Brighton, King's) tend to have more flexibility.
Will my child cope at primary without strong English?
Children aged 5 to 8 acquire language through immersion faster than adults expect. Most Bangkok primary schools offer in-class EAL support in the early years. From Year 4 the language demand of the curriculum outpaces what immersion alone delivers, and some schools require an English screen for older primary applicants.
Is American Elementary at ISB compatible with a move to a UK or IB system later?
Yes. Children moving from American Elementary into ENC Year 7 or IB MYP at age 11 transition without curriculum gaps in the core subjects. Mathematics is where the registers differ most, and individual schools assess and place accordingly.
