The SMIC Private School Shanghai

An American-track high school with one of the strongest AP programs in mainland China, attached to a Chinese-track sister school under the same roof.

Founded
2001

An American-track high school with one of the strongest AP programs in mainland China, attached to a Chinese-track sister school under the same roof. Suits families who want academic intensity and a Christian values frame, less so families chasing a polished international brand.

SMIC sits in Pudong next to the chip plant that founded it. The English Track follows a US college-prep curriculum and runs an AP Capstone program, one of the few in mainland China. Pass rates on AP exams sit very high. Around 3,000 students across both tracks, with about half the faculty experienced foreign hires.

Parents praise dedicated teachers and strong academic outcomes, and several describe a holistic experience where their children's confidence and character grew alongside grades. The Christian ethos is part of daily life and works for some families, less so for others. Concerns surface around the size of the school, variable communication, and a mix of stronger and weaker teachers across departments. Fees come in below the top international tier in Shanghai, which most parents see as the school's clearest advantage.

  • Students and staff describe a highly academic school with motivated pupils, strong AP teaching, and some standout teachers.
  • The negative signal is serious and concentrated around student wellbeing. One ex-student described bullying by peers and adults, and said the school did not act effectively.
  • Teacher comments are mixed. Several praise the students and compensation, while others flag workload, inconsistent expectations, and management issues.
