In Brief
If your family is planning a multi-year or long-term stay in Japan and you want your children to genuinely learn Japanese - not just exposure - Nishimachi is the best option in central Tokyo for ages 5-15. Just be clear-eyed that the school ends at Grade 9, so you will need a high school plan.
Nishimachi has been running since 1949 and its differentiator is still its most talked-about feature: a bilingual programme that requires all students to study Japanese every single day across nine proficiency levels, from beginner to native speaker. For families staying in Japan more than two or three years, this is genuinely valuable. The school uses an American-influenced curriculum with class sizes of 15-22 and a 7:1 student-teacher ratio that gives it an attentive, community feel. The Moto-Azabu campus, a ten-minute walk from Hiroo, sits in a residential neighbourhood that feels less 'expat bubble' than some other options.
The TNK parent association is unusually active - all parents are automatically members - and gives the school a distinct community warmth that comes up consistently in family accounts. Middle school students compete in the Kanto Plain inter-school sports league, and the no-cut policy for teams and productions means every student who wants to participate can. Graduates from Grade 9 go on mostly to ASIJ (around 35%), Yokohama International (10%), and Sacred Heart (8%), with roughly 30% heading overseas to boarding schools in the US and UK.
The school ends at Grade 9. This is the main thing to think through before enrolling: you will need a high school transition plan, and that transition requires reapplication and adjustment to a new environment right when your child is in mid-adolescence. Campus infrastructure is also older than many alternatives - the main building is well-maintained but compact. An older thread from teachers noted some recent leadership movement; worth asking the admissions team what has settled since then. English proficiency requirements are real - at least one parent (preferably the primary caregiver) should communicate in English.
What parents value
- –Genuine bilingual Japanese programme across nine levels - arguably the best Japanese language education of any English-medium international school in central Tokyo. Strong community culture with the TNK parent association.
- –Central Moto-Azabu location; 7:1 student-teacher ratio; class sizes 15-22. WASC, CIS, JCIS and EARCOS accredited. No-cut policy for teams and productions.
Points of consideration
- –School ends at Grade 9 - you will need a high school plan before you enrol. This is not a long-term through-school unless you have a clear onward option in mind.
- –Older campus; some reported leadership instability in recent years. Ask specifically what is stable now. English proficiency required for admission - at least one parent must communicate in English.
