In Brief

If your children are in Grades 1-8 and you want a genuinely small, values-led American-curriculum school with more personal attention than TAS can offer, TAAS is worth a visit. The Yangmingshan hillside setting is unusual, but the distance from central Taipei is real.

TAAS occupies its own quiet niche in Taipei's international school market. Known locally as the 'school in the trees', it sits in the forested hills of Yangmingshan in Shilin - green, peaceful, and a long way from the density of Da'an or Zhongshan. The school is part of the global Seventh-day Adventist education network, the largest Protestant private educational system in the world, and that shapes the culture: Christian values, Saturday Sabbath observance, and a community-first ethos are genuine features of daily life here.

With around 120 students across Grades 1-8, TAAS is tiny. That's the point. The school explicitly tailors instruction to individual students, with a low teacher-to-student ratio that's difficult to replicate in a school of 500. EAL support is built in at every grade level - there's a dedicated EAL Prep homeroom for beginner English learners - and learning support services are available for students with mild to moderate needs. Graduates overwhelmingly continue at TAS, Morrison Academy, or directly into US schools.

TAAS only goes to Grade 8, which means every family faces a transition decision at the end of middle school. Plan that conversation early: if TAS is the intended destination, be aware of the admissions process and academic bar there. The school's fees are notably lower than TAS, and the inclusive, family-style atmosphere is a genuine draw - but the Yangmingshan location means the commute from central Taipei is 30-40 minutes in normal traffic. Worth asking specifically where the bulk of families live.

What parents value
  • Tiny student body of around 120; genuinely individualised instruction in a way that larger schools cannot match.
  • Strong EAL and learning support provision baked into the curriculum. Good fit for families whose children are developing English or need additional academic support.
  • Forested hillside campus on Yangmingshan - unusual and genuinely pleasant for younger students.
Points of consideration
  • School only runs to Grade 8. Every family has to plan for secondary transition - usually to TAS, Morrison, or a school abroad. Factor that into your decision.
  • Adventist faith ethos is central: Saturday is the Sabbath, Christian values underpin school culture. Not the right fit for families where that's a significant mismatch.
  • Yangmingshan location is lovely but remote. From central Taipei districts it's a 30-40 minute commute each way in normal traffic. Check where the school bus routes run before assuming it's convenient.

Academic Results

TAAS follows the American curriculum aligned to Common Core standards through Grades 1-8. The school uses MAP assessments to track student progress. There is no AP programme at this level; high school AP courses become available after students transfer to TAS, Morrison, or other secondary schools.

Chinese Mandarin instruction is part of the programme. EAL Prep homeroom is available for students at beginner English levels, covering academic English across all subjects.

Extra Curriculars

Facilities: Outdoor play area · Library · Forested campus grounds

The Yangmingshan campus is set in trees with outdoor spaces that are rarely available to urban schools. Co-curricular activity includes music concerts, community service, and field trips designed for the younger age range.

After-school programmes are available. Ask about specific clubs and activities for your child's age group and interests when you visit.

Student Body

Around 120 students attend TAAS across Grades 1-8. The school serves Taiwanese students with foreign passports and international families. The community is diverse in nationality but small enough that most families know each other.

The Adventist education network connects TAAS students globally - many families who attend have links to the wider SDA community in Taiwan and across Asia.
