SAIS is the strongest American-curriculum option in Shekou for families who want a smaller school, a genuine outdoor learning environment and flexibility on upper-secondary pathway. At CNY 158K to CNY 278K it is mid-market, and the small cohort size is both the appeal and the honest limitation.

SAIS has been in Shekou since 2005, which makes it one of the longest-running international schools in that corner of Shenzhen. It sits alongside Sihai Park - a 13.5-hectare park on the west side that functions as a genuine learning space for science, ecology and outdoor projects rather than just a pleasant backdrop. The school holds Cognia accreditation (formerly AdvancED), is approved by China's Ministry of Education and the Guangdong Education Department, and admits foreign nationals plus students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Mainland Chinese nationals are not eligible.

The academic approach has evolved toward inquiry-based and project-based learning as the primary pedagogy, aligned with IB principles and AP standards at secondary. Students use technology extensively in projects - 3D modelling, virtual reality, presentations to public audiences - and the school's approach to maker education has earned it some recognition in that space. Class sizes run small, teaching assistants are employed across the school, and the Bao'an campus offers boarding alongside additional upper-secondary pathways including AP, Cambridge A-Level and HKDSE options beyond the main Shekou site.

With around 300 students, SAIS is one of the smaller international schools in Shenzhen. The breadth of specialist provision, sports leagues and ECA options is more limited than at BASIS or ISNS. Families moving from a large, well-resourced campus should calibrate expectations accordingly. The fee schedule from ISD (2025/2026 data) runs from CNY 158,000 at kindergarten to CNY 278,000 at Grades 9 to 12 - competitive for Shekou.
