A boarding high school in Dameisha, on Shenzhen's east coast. Founded 2015 by Vanke (the property group) with Shenzhen Middle School. About 700 students, grades 9-12. WASC accredited.

What it actually is: a bridge school for mostly local Shenzhen kids heading to universities in the US, UK, Canada and Europe. Three tracks - US, UK and an arts academy. Not a traditional expat international school. Most students are Chinese and the school's own line is "global citizens with a Chinese identity." If your child doesn't speak Mandarin or you want a typical expat peer group, look elsewhere (Shekou is where most expat families cluster).

University outcomes are genuinely strong. 2025 cohort: every graduate placed overseas, more than half into a global top-30. Oxbridge and Ivy offers each year. The arts track sends kids to RISD, Parsons and the like.

Campus is large, modern and on the beach. Air is cleaner than central Shenzhen. The flip side: Dameisha is roughly 30 minutes from the city core, longer in traffic, which is why most students board.

Where it gets mixed. Staff turnover has been a recurring complaint. According to one teacher, "leadership is not clear on the direction" and "investors are looking to make a quick return." Another said the management was "terrible." College counselling has had patchy reviews from staff despite the headline stats - worth asking pointed questions on visit about who your child's counsellor would actually be and how long they've been there.

Culture is academically intense. It's a Chinese boarding school in feel, not a relaxed Western international one. Kids who thrive are self-driven and comfortable in a bilingual, high-pressure environment.

Bottom line: if your child is bilingual or motivated to integrate, wants a credible runway to a Western university, and you value the beach campus over central Shenzhen convenience, VMA is a serious option. If you want a Western-style expat school with a Western peer cohort, this isn't it - look at Shekou.

Things to ask on the school visit: current expat/foreign-passport headcount, college counsellor caseload and tenure, teacher turnover rate this year, day vs boarding breakdown.

  • Out-of-centre site at Dameisha is a draw or a deal-breaker depending on the family. One Reddit user described it as "on the beach" but roughly 30 minutes from the city centre.
  • Information is scarce in English. One parent said they could not find much online and were relying on ISR ratings to judge it.
  • Teacher-side discussion flags heavy workload and long days alongside otherwise reasonable contracts. Treat as staff context, not parent feedback.
  • Students run their own course-and-teacher rating site (vmawalk), which suggests an academically engaged cohort and a willingness to critique teaching internally.
