A small American-style school in Shekou that leans hard on project-based learning and low ratios, much smaller than SIS or QSI but pitched at the same expat catchment.

SAIS opened in 2005 and now serves roughly 300 students from Pre-K to grade 12 on Gongyuan Road in Shekou. The curriculum is American at its base, with PYP in primary and AP available higher up, and the school holds Cognia accreditation. Joseph Cirelli leads a setup that keeps classes small enough for genuinely individualised teaching.

The pitch to parents is the size itself. With a few hundred children across the whole school, teachers and administrators know every family, and project-based work is woven through the timetable rather than tacked on. Forum chatter from teachers describes a well-resourced building with a creative classroom feel. The trade-off mirrors most small schools in the city. Sport, arts and senior-year peer group are thinner than at SIS or QSI, and families who want a deep co-curricular bench tend to look elsewhere.

  • Cognia-accredited K-12 American school in Shekou, founded 2005, separate from the larger Shanghai American School. Independent parent and teacher signal online is thin.
  • A 2025 r/Internationalteachers post asked for any information on the school and produced no substantive replies beyond an offer to discuss living in Shenzhen. A 2025 r/shenzhen post asking for tea on SAISZ produced no detailed responses.
  • Older directory and ISR-style reviews describe a school with good housing allowance, modest contract bonuses and a principal with significant decision-making authority. Reviewers note retention is reasonable.
  • Conflicting accounts on quality. One student review on a directory listing alleges good teachers being fired or quitting and unqualified staff being retained, with most teachers not American. A separate review describes supportive teachers and a wholesome principal.
  • The school is named in 2010s threads as a fallback option for teachers without strong credentials, alongside BASIS and Shenzhen Nanshan. It is rarely placed in tier-1 conversation alongside SIS, SWIS or SCIE.
  • Independent parent voice is essentially absent. Treat the available signal as recruiter-side and small-sample student commentary rather than a representative parent verdict.
