In Brief

King's Canterbury's Shenzhen campus is a credible British boarding and day school with genuine heritage behind it, but it is still finding its feet - no published results, small enrolment, and no parent reviews on any platform. Worth a serious look if you want British A-Levels and boarding in Qianhai; go in with realistic expectations about what a seven-year-old campus offers.

King's Canterbury has been educating students since 597 AD, and the Shenzhen campus carries that association deliberately. Opened in 2019 as the school's first overseas venture, it runs two separate campuses: Pre-Prep in Nanshan for ages 3 to 5, and the Prep and Senior School in Qianhai for ages 6 to 18. Instruction blends English and Mandarin from the earliest years, moving to predominantly English at secondary with IGCSE and A-Levels. Boarding is available on campus for secondary students.

The school is still building toward full capacity. With around 500 students and no published exam results yet, families cannot point to outcome data the way they can at ISNS or SCIE. The appointment of John Wright as Executive Principal in August 2024 - a Cambridge and University of London graduate with over 20 years of experience - has brought fresh leadership with a background in academic cooperation at some of the UK's leading institutions. The campus facilities are well equipped and the Forest School element at Pre-Prep is a genuine differentiator for early years families.

No reviews exist on ISD, iSchoolAdvisor or any parent platform. That is not unusual for a school of this age, but it does mean you are relying on visits, open days and conversations with current families rather than independent opinion. The Qianhai location puts it close to Harrow Shenzhen and works well for families living in that part of Nanshan, but adds travel time for anyone based in Shekou, Futian or the east of the city.

What parents value
  • Genuine British heritage: the first overseas campus of King's Canterbury, founded 597 AD. The connection to one of England's oldest schools is real, not a licensing arrangement, and includes student exchange programmes with the Canterbury senior school.
  • Bilingual English-Mandarin instruction from Pre-Prep through to secondary, with IGCSE and A-Levels as the upper school framework. Boarding available on campus for families who need it.
  • Executive Principal John Wright brings a strong academic background and is actively developing the school's academic and co-curricular programme. Fresh leadership with clear ambitions.
Points of consideration
  • No published exam results and no independent parent reviews yet. The school is still building its track record. Ask at your admissions visit about first A-Level cohort outcomes and university placement destinations.
  • Fees run CNY 205,000 at Pre-Prep to CNY 309,800 at Sixth Form - mid-to-high range for Shenzhen. One-time application fee CNY 2,000 and refundable deposit CNY 25,000.
  • Two separate campuses (Pre-Prep in Nanshan, Prep and Senior in Qianhai) means a campus change at age 6. The Qianhai location also adds commute time for families in Shekou or Futian.
