In Brief
AIS is the school of choice for Australian families in Sharjah and a genuine option for any family that values wellbeing culture alongside academic results. If you're comparing with VISS, which also offers an Australian-pathway exit, AIS tends to have the warmer community feel but a smaller senior cohort.
AIS has been in Sharjah since 2005 - 20 years of track record versus the newer competition. The Queensland Government partnership gives the curriculum genuine standing; the school is a Recognised School under the Queensland Education Act and affiliated with Education Queensland International. At senior level, families choose between the IB Diploma and the Queensland Certificate of Education, which is a more unusual option in the UAE and useful for families planning a return to Australia.
The wellbeing infrastructure is the most developed of any school in this group. AIS is the only UAE school working with Professor Lea Waters' Visible Wellbeing framework, and the Oasis pastoral care programme sits alongside two trained Guidance Officers in primary and secondary. Parent survey data from 107 WSA respondents shows 80% of students feel a strong sense of belonging and 73% of parents would recommend the school - meaningful numbers from a meaningful sample. Steve McLuckie has been in post since 2018 and held his staff together through the Covid disruptions.
Fees reach AED 69,129 at Grade 12, which puts AIS in the same premium band as VISS. The Maleha Road campus location - out near the warehouses district - is not central for most of Sharjah; families from Al Taawun or central Sharjah are looking at a real commute. The school is on the smaller side (around 350 students) which limits the breadth of electives at senior level. Families weighing AIS against VISS should note that VISS has a larger cohort and a more central location; AIS tends to win on pastoral warmth.
What parents value
- –20-year track record; Queensland Government partnership gives curriculum genuine standing for families returning to Australia. SPEA Very Good in 2022-23.
- –Two senior pathways - IB Diploma and QCE - is genuinely unusual in the UAE. Steve McLuckie has been principal since 2018; leadership continuity is strong.
- –107 WSA parent reviews at 3.4/5; 80% of students report high sense of belonging. The Visible Wellbeing pastoral framework is the most structured of any school in this Sharjah group.
Points of consideration
- –Maleha Road location is inconvenient for most of Sharjah. If you're in Al Taawun or near the Dubai border, factor in 25-35 minutes each way.
- –Around 350 students means a small senior cohort - fewer peers and a narrower electives menu in Grades 10-12 compared to larger schools.
- –Fees reach AED 69,129 at Grade 12, one of the highest in Sharjah. Bus, meals, and uniform are additional. Confirm the current fee schedule directly as it follows the SPEA-approved structure.
