An established Malaysian-owned dual-stream school, with both a Cambridge international track and a national track running on the same Permas Jaya campus.

R.E.A.L. Schools started in Cheras in 1985 and the Johor Bahru campus opened in 2008 on a five-acre site at Bandar Baru Permas Jaya, on the Pasir Gudang side of the city rather than the Iskandar Puteri corridor most expats favour. Curriculum splits clearly: the international stream runs Cambridge Primary through to IGCSE, the private stream follows the Malaysian national curriculum, and families pick a lane at entry.

Parents praise warm, attentive teachers and small classes capped around 25, plus solid facilities for the price point including swimming pool, labs and a library. Fees sit in the affordable-to-mid bracket for JB. The location works for families based around Permas Jaya, Masai or Pasir Gudang, but is a long commute for households living closer to Singapore or in Iskandar Puteri.

  • Directory reviews skew positive, with parents describing teachers as exceptional and genuinely invested in pupils, both academically and personally.
  • The Sanctuary campus draws specific praise for a green, low-density site, and parents talk about the school in family-style terms rather than as a standard institution.
  • The British IGCSE pathway is highlighted as a strength, alongside investment in 1-to-1 iPad programmes and recent facility upgrades.
  • During the pandemic, parents singled out continuity of teaching, with timetables maintained online and Apple Teacher certified staff, and this appears to have hardened goodwill in the parent base.
  • Critical signal is narrower and concentrated in secondary, with comments that some secondary teachers come across as less serious, and complaints sit more on facilities than on teaching.
  • Reddit and Mumsnet returned no substantive threads on this campus, so the picture relies on directory and testimonial sources rather than an independent forum view.

Positives

  • Teaching quality, primary. Parents describe teachers as caring, professional and consistent communicators.
  • Sanctuary campus environment. Green, low-density site framed as a calm learning environment.
  • British IGCSE delivery. Cambridge IGCSE pathway and digital infrastructure cited as strengths.
  • Online and pandemic continuity. Apple Teacher certified staff, full timetables maintained online, parents valued the continuity.

Considerations

  • Secondary teaching. Some parents flag a less serious tone in parts of secondary, mostly tied to specific staff.
  • Facilities. Pool, indoor stadium and labs in place, but some niggles over upkeep.
