In Brief

Lanna is the best-value British pathway in Chiang Mai for families who want IGCSE and A-Levels without paying IB prices. At around 1,000 students it is large enough to feel like a proper school, and the 2018 Hang Dong campus upgrade resolved the main historic complaint about split sites.

Lanna runs the British Cambridge pathway from Early Years through to A-Levels and is WASC-accredited through 2031. With roughly 978 students from many nationalities, it is the largest international school in Chiang Mai by enrolment and the one most families encounter first when researching British-curriculum options. Head of School Neil Matthews took over in 2025 after Rob Stewart's long tenure.

The Hang Dong campus - about 15 minutes south of the city - consolidated what used to be multiple sites, and families report a noticeably improved school environment since the move. Class sizes are small by local standards, with the IES (Intensive English Support) groups capped at 12. The PTO is active and parent workshops run throughout the year.

Hang Dong is not central, and families based near Nimman or the Old City will have a 20-25 minute commute each way. A Reddit thread from early 2026 noted mixed views on management under new leadership; some families mention that the school's direction is still settling after the transition. Fees at the top end - THB 803,400 for Years 12-13 - are comparable to Prem for senior students, which makes the IB route worth comparing at that price point.

What parents value
  • WASC-accredited through 2031. Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level pathway is well-established, with exam fees included in tuition for Years 1-13. Sibling discounts of 10-15% reduce total family costs.
  • Largest international school in Chiang Mai by enrolment (~978 students). Wide nationality mix, active PTO, and a consolidated single campus since 2018.
  • Small IES class sizes (maximum 12) for students building English. STEAM labs, swimming pool, sports fields and music provision on site.
Points of consideration
  • Hang Dong location is 15-20 minutes south of the city centre. Families in Nimman or the Old City area face a meaningful daily commute each direction.
  • New head of school (Neil Matthews, from 2025) means the school is in transition. Worth asking at a visit how the leadership change has affected staff and parent confidence.
  • Senior fees (Years 12-13: THB 803,400) are the highest in Chiang Mai, competitive with Prem. If your child is heading into the Sixth Form, compare the A-Level and IBDP pathways carefully before deciding.
