In Brief
Sunrise is Bali's community school in the truest sense - founded by parents, non-profit, values-led, and priced to match. If values-based education and a genuine community matter more to you than a Cambridge or IB brand name, it's one of the most authentic options in western Bali.
Sunrise School has been in Kerobokan since 2000, founded by a group of parents who wanted something different from the exam-focused schools already on the island. Twenty-five years on, it's run by Yayasan MACK, a non-profit foundation, and uses the IEYC (Early Years), IPC (Primary), and IMYC (Middle Years) - a thematic, inquiry-based curriculum framework developed by the International Curriculum Association and used in 2,000+ schools globally. SPK status (Sekolah Perjanjian Kerjasama) means it operates under an Indonesian national school partnership, integrating Kurikulum Merdeka alongside the international curriculum.
The school runs from Small World (18 months) through to Year 9/Grade 9 (Junior High was re-introduced in 2024/2025, with a dedicated new building). About 250 students attend. Yoga and mindfulness are timetabled subjects, not extras. Gardening, NVC (Non-Violent Communication), and community outreach programmes are embedded in weekly life. Sunrise built Bali's first wastewater garden in 2000. Families with long Sunrise histories describe it as a place where children know every adult by name, where assemblies feel like community gatherings, and where values are lived rather than displayed on a wall.
Sunrise is not the school for families who need a portable examination pathway. There are no IGCSEs, no IB, no A Levels. The IMYC Junior High is only in its second year and the senior school pathway from Year 10 onward remains incomplete - you will need another school from age 15. Fees of IDR 65.7M-132.2M per year (plus a one-time IDR 10M registration fee and annual IDR 5.7M levy) are among the most affordable on the international school circuit in Kerobokan. The main limitation is trajectory: plan your Year 9 exit before you arrive.
What parents value
- –Non-profit, parent-founded, 25 years of community depth in Kerobokan. One of the most affordable full-international-curriculum schools in western Bali. IEYC/IPC/IMYC framework used in 2,000+ schools worldwide.
- –Yoga, mindfulness, gardening, NVC, and community outreach are core to the programme - not optional extras. Small school feel (~250 students) with strong pastoral relationships across age groups.
- –SPK status means Indonesian students can attend alongside international families. Strong alumni loyalty and consistent parent community - genuinely one of the most trusted school communities among long-term Bali residents.
Points of consideration
- –No IGCSE, IB, A Level, or any externally benchmarked examination pathway. If your child may need to transfer to a conventional international school or university pathway from Year 10, plan this well in advance.
- –Junior High (Years 7-9) was re-introduced only in 2024/2025 and runs in a new building. Ask about curriculum depth and staffing for the IMYC programme before enrolling a secondary-age child.
- –Senior school provision beyond Year 9 does not currently exist at Sunrise. Families will need to consider where their child moves at 14-15. Ask the school about transition support and which secondary schools local families typically move to.
