Jakarta vs Singapore vs KL — Comparing International Schools Across Three Cities

TL;DR

  • Singapore has the deepest pool of top-tier international schools in Southeast Asia, but fees are the highest in the region, typically SGD 30,000-55,000 ($22,000-$41,000) at premium schools, and total cost of living is significantly higher than Jakarta or KL
  • Jakarta's top international schools (JIS, BSJ, AIS) charge $25,000-$36,000 at secondary, comparable to Singapore's mid-tier, but the total cost of living (housing, domestic help, dining) is substantially lower
  • Kuala Lumpur offers the best value: strong schools at 30-40% less than Singapore, with lower cost of living. ISKL and BSKL rival the quality of Singapore and Jakarta's top tier
  • Admissions pressure varies: Singapore's top schools have long waitlists. Jakarta's premium schools are competitive at entry points (Nursery, Year 1, Year 7). KL is generally more accessible
  • The decision is rarely about schools alone, it is about the total package: career, lifestyle, cost, and how long you plan to stay

Fees Compared

Premium tier (secondary / Diploma level)

School City Annual Fee (USD) Exit Qualification
Singapore American School Singapore ~$42,000 AP, IB DP
UWC SEA Dover Singapore ~$38,000 IB DP
Tanglin Trust Singapore ~$35,000 IB DP, A Levels
JIS Jakarta $35,916 AP, IB DP
BSKL KL ~$34,000 IB DP
ISKL KL ~$33,000 IB DP
BSJ Jakarta $32,910 IGCSE, IB DP
Alice Smith KL ~$28,000 IB DP
AIS Jakarta $26,308 IB DP

Jakarta fees from verified 2025-26 fee schedules (IDR 16,826 = $1). Singapore and KL fees from published 2025-26 school fee schedules, approximate USD conversions at SGD 1.34 and MYR 4.50 to $1. Verify current rates directly.

At the premium end, the three cities are closer than most people assume. JIS at $35,916 is comparable to Tanglin Trust in Singapore. BSJ at $32,910 is in the same bracket as ISKL. The fee gap shows up more in the mid-tier, Jakarta's $10,000-$20,000 bracket has fewer credible options than KL's, and Singapore's mid-tier starts higher.

Mid-tier comparison

KL has the strongest mid-tier market. Schools like Fairview, Nexus, and Tenby charge MYR 35,000-55,000 ($8,000-$12,000) at primary level and deliver credible IB or Cambridge programmes. Jakarta's equivalent bracket, NAS, ACG, NJIS, GMIS, is smaller, and the quality varies more. Singapore's mid-tier starts at SGD 15,000-22,000 ($11,000-$16,000), which overlaps with Jakarta's premium schools on price.

For families who need an international school under $15,000 per year, KL has the most options. Jakarta has some, see our guide to affordable international schools in Jakarta, but the depth of the mid-tier market in KL is hard to match.

School Quality and Depth

Singapore has the deepest pool of top-tier schools in the region. The top five or six Singapore international schools would rank among the best anywhere in the world. University counselling infrastructure is mature. IB results across multiple schools are consistently above global averages. Teacher recruitment benefits from Singapore's reputation as a desirable posting, schools attract experienced staff from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and North America. The downside: it is the most expensive education market in Southeast Asia.

Jakarta has a strong but narrower top tier. JIS is the standout, the only school in the city offering both AP and IB Diploma, with WASC accreditation and a co-curricular programme that rivals Singapore's best. BSJ delivers a high-quality British pathway through IGCSE to IB. ISJ brings a British independent school character rare in the region. AIS rounds out the top bracket with strong pastoral care and learning support. Below the top four, quality drops more sharply than in Singapore or KL. The gap between Jakarta's premium schools and its mid-tier is wider than in the other two cities.

KL sits between the two. ISKL and Alice Smith are strong schools by any regional standard. BSKL (part of the Nord Anglia group) has invested heavily in facilities and programme breadth. Garden International has a long track record. The mid-tier is where KL stands out, there are more credible, affordable schools in KL than in either Jakarta or Singapore. For families on a budget who still want a recognised international qualification, KL offers the widest choice.

Admissions and Availability

SingaporeCompetitive, particularly at popular entry points. UWC SEA and SAS have waiting lists that can run 12-18 months at certain year groups. Some schools prioritise specific nationalities or passport holders. Admissions assessments are standard at the premium tier.
JakartaThe premium schools are competitive at Nursery, Year 1 and Year 7. JIS and BSJ can have wait times at popular entry points. Mid-year entry is possible at most schools but availability depends on the year group. Jakarta's mid-tier schools are generally more accessible, NAS, ACG and NJIS rarely have waiting lists.
KLGenerally the most accessible of the three. Even premium schools like ISKL and BSKL typically have capacity across most year groups, though popular entry points can fill. The larger number of mid-tier schools means families almost always have options, even at short notice.

For families relocating mid-year or at short notice, KL and Jakarta are more forgiving than Singapore.

Cost of Living

School fees are not the full picture. The total cost of family life varies dramatically.

Jakarta Singapore Kuala Lumpur
3-bed apartment (expat area) $1,500-$3,500/month $4,000-$8,000/month $1,200-$3,000/month
Live-in domestic help $200-$400/month $600-$800/month (foreign worker levy applies) $300-$500/month
Family dining out $15-$40 per meal $40-$100+ per meal $15-$50 per meal
Transport Driver: $300-$500/month. No viable public transport for school runs. Excellent public transport. Car ownership very expensive. Affordable driving. Public transport improving.
Healthcare (international clinic) Moderate Expensive Moderate

Jakarta's biggest advantage is the cost of domestic help and housing. A family with two children at JIS ($35,916 each) paying $2,500/month for a house in Pondok Indah, $400/month for a live-in helper and $500/month for a driver is still spending less in total than the same family at SAS in Singapore paying $42,000 in fees plus $6,000/month rent.

KL undercuts both on almost every metric. Housing is cheaper than Jakarta in most areas. Domestic help is affordable. School fees at the premium level are comparable to Jakarta but the mid-tier is cheaper.

Singapore wins on infrastructure. Public transport is world-class. Roads are well-maintained. The city functions. Jakarta's traffic is a genuine daily challenge. KL falls somewhere in between.

Lifestyle and Family Life

Jakarta is chaotic, generous, and full of energy. The expat community is tight-knit, particularly in South Jakarta around Kemang, Pondok Indah and Cipete. Domestic help makes family life practical in ways that Singapore does not easily allow. Weekend travel to Bali, Yogyakarta, and the Thousand Islands is easy. The trade-offs are real: traffic, flooding in rainy season, air quality on bad days, and infrastructure gaps. Families who embrace it tend to love it. Families who need predictability find it hard.

Singapore is efficient, safe, and very well organised. The school-to-activity-to-dinner routine runs like clockwork. Public spaces are clean. Healthcare is excellent. Weekend travel reaches Bali, Bangkok, KL and regional beaches. It is the easiest of the three cities for families who want everything to work without friction. It is also the most expensive, and some families find the scale and pace constraining, particularly for teenagers.

KL offers space. Housing is larger and more affordable. The driving is manageable. Weekend travel reaches Langkawi, Penang, Cameron Highlands and Singapore. The food is exceptional. The city is less polished than Singapore but more spacious than Jakarta, with a growing expat community that is less concentrated than Jakarta's but spread across several suburban hubs (Mont Kiara, Bangsar, Damansara).

Which City Suits Which Family

Jakarta works best for: families on a corporate package with school fees covered, families who want access to JIS or BSJ (schools with no direct equivalent elsewhere in the region), families who value the depth of the expat community and the quality of domestic support. Read our guide to relocating to Jakarta with kids for the practical detail.

Singapore works best forfamilies who prioritise infrastructure, safety and the widest possible range of top-tier schools. Dual-income families where both parents work benefit most from Singapore's efficiency. If budget is not a primary constraint, the school choice is the deepest in the region.
KL works best forfamilies on a tighter budget who still want a strong international school. Families who value space, big houses, gardens, room to breathe, find KL gives more for less. Families relocating for the first time to Southeast Asia often find KL the gentlest landing.
The honest answer for most mobile familiesif your employer is paying school fees, choose the city that suits the job and the lifestyle. The premium schools in all three cities will deliver a credible education and prepare your child for university. If you are paying the fees yourself, KL offers the best value. If you need the strongest possible single school, JIS and SAS are the two names that come up most often in regional conversations.

FAQs

Is it easy to move between schools in different countries?

Easier than most parents expect, if the curriculum aligns. A child moving from a British school in Jakarta (BSJ) to a British school in KL (BSKL or Alice Smith) can transfer with minimal disruption. IB-to-IB moves are similarly smooth. The harder transitions are between curriculum systems, switching from an American school to a British school at IGCSE level, for example, requires careful planning. Most international schools are experienced at managing transfers and will assess on entry.

Which city has the best IB results?

Singapore, by depth. Multiple Singapore schools post IB averages above 35 points. In Jakarta, [Binus Simprug](/international-schools/jakarta/binus-school-simprug/) publishes an average of 34, but the premium schools (JIS, BSJ) do not publish results publicly. In KL, ISKL and a handful of others post competitive results. The data is patchy everywhere, ask schools directly for their most recent scores.

Can I move my child from Jakarta to Singapore mid-year?

Yes, though availability depends on the school and year group. Most international schools in all three cities accept mid-year applications. Singapore's premium schools are the most likely to have waitlists. Give yourself at least 2-3 months lead time where possible.

Are Jakarta international schools accredited the same as Singapore's?

The accreditation bodies are the same, CIS, WASC, IB, Cambridge. JIS holds WASC and CIS accreditation, the same as SAS in Singapore. BSJ holds CIS and BSO accreditation, similar to Tanglin Trust. Accreditation is not city-specific; it is school-specific. Check each school individually.

Which city is safest for families?

Singapore consistently ranks as one of the safest cities in the world. KL is generally safe in expat areas, with normal precautions. Jakarta is safe in the neighbourhoods where international families live (Pondok Indah, Kemang, Cipete, Menteng) but requires more awareness, gated compounds, drivers, and domestic support are part of the fabric of family life. Crime affecting expat families in any of the three cities is rare.

Is it worth moving to KL for cheaper school fees?

It depends on the numbers. A family saving $15,000-$20,000 per child per year by choosing KL over Singapore, without sacrificing school quality, is making a decision worth $30,000-$40,000 annually for two children. Add cheaper housing and living costs, and the total gap can exceed $80,000-$100,000 per year. For some families, that changes everything. For others, the job keeps them where they are.
