Established in 1951 in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, JIS has grown into one of Indonesia's largest international schools under Head of School Maya Nelson. The school serves students from early childhood through grade 12 with a distinctive dual-track approach offering both International Baccalaureate programs (Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma) alongside 28 Advanced Placement courses. This flexibility allows students to pursue either pathway or combine elements from both, preparing them for universities worldwide while maintaining American high school diploma requirements.

The school's facilities match its ambitious educational scope, featuring a 50-meter Olympic swimming pool, 800-seat performing arts center, three gymnasiums, and specialized spaces including robotics labs, recording studios, and a black box theater. With students representing more than 52 nationalities - led by Indonesian (20%), Japanese (19%), and American (14%) populations - JIS creates a genuinely multicultural environment. The school requires all high school students to complete Creativity, Activity, and Service components, emphasizing community engagement alongside academic achievement through its restructured co-curricular program designed for equitable leadership opportunities.

Strengths

  • Extensive facilities including Olympic-standard pool and professional-grade performing arts center
  • Dual IB and AP pathways provide curricular flexibility for different university destinations
  • Large scale enables diverse extracurricular offerings and competitive athletics programs
  • Over 50 nationalities create authentic international community
  • 75-year history demonstrates institutional stability and experience
  • CIS and WASC accreditation with excellent ratings
  • Strong emphasis on service learning and community engagement

Considerations

  • Fees sit at the top of Jakarta's market, and most families are on full corporate packages. Self-funders say the wealth optics show up socially as much as financially.
  • The teaching is inquiry-based and student-led, not drill-and-test. Parents from British or East Asian systems sometimes worry early on that it isn't challenging enough.
  • At 2,500+ students across three campuses, JIS is one of the largest international schools in Asia. Some parents say a quieter or less assertive child can get lost in the crowd, particularly in the move from elementary to middle school.

  • One of Jakarta's two anchor international schools alongside British School Jakarta. Founded 1951, around 2,500 students from 70+ nationalities, American-led curriculum with IB Diploma and AP options.
  • Teachers and international-recruitment posters consistently rank JIS in the top tier globally for compensation, savings potential and resources. One teacher said the package supports drivers, household help and meaningful savings.
  • Parents describe a large, well-resourced campus with extensive facilities (multiple theatres, pools, science labs, libraries) and a vibrant PTA and co-curricular life.
  • Site location in Cilandak draws complaints. Jakarta traffic and pollution are recurring concerns rather than school-specific issues.
  • Fees sit at the top of the Jakarta market, broadly USD 20-30k+ depending on year group, with extras for trips, exams and electives.

Positives

  • Top-tier academics and resources. Consistently ranked among Asia's top international schools by educators; strong IB/AP track and IASAS sports membership.
  • Community and PTA life. Parents describe a large, active community with strong PTA, co-curriculars and inclusion of special-needs families.

Considerations

  • Fees and extras. Premium fee level with substantial supplementary charges for activities, trips and exams.
  • Location and Jakarta context. Traffic and pollution near the Cilandak campus come up regularly, mostly as a Jakarta issue rather than a school issue.
