Best American Schools in Istanbul

Robert College, Üsküdar American Academy, IICS, Hisar, Koç. The American-curriculum schools in Istanbul compared on fees, AP results, and accreditation.

Best American Schools in Istanbul

The brief

  • Robert College and Üsküdar American Academy are the historic American foundations, established 1863 and 1876. English-medium, national-exam selective, AP plus IB at the top end. See Robert College and Üsküdar American Academy.
  • Istanbul International Community School (IICS) is the only English-medium, foreign-passport school running AP alongside the full IB continuum. CIS and NEASC. Founded 1911. See IICS.
  • Hisar School publishes the strongest AP results in the city: 96% scored 3 or above in 2024, 75% scored 4 or 5 across 517 exams. SAT middle-50% 1250 to 1480. See Hisar Schools.
  • Koç School and Sezin School offer dual MEB plus American with IB on top. Koç is the Asian-side benchmark; Sezin reports a 38-point DP average. See Koç School and Sezin School.
  • A pure US-style transcript without a parallel Turkish stream only exists at IICS. Every other American school in Istanbul carries an MEB layer that shapes the daily timetable.

Istanbul has the deepest American-curriculum heritage of any city in Europe or the Middle East. Robert College, founded 1863, is the oldest American school established outside the United States, predating most US state universities. Üsküdar American Academy followed in 1876. Both still teach in English; both still send graduates to US research universities.

The structural feature that defines the market today: nearly every private school is regulated by the Turkish MEB (Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı). That produces a dual-curriculum model: Turkish national curriculum underneath, AP and SAT layered on top. The only English-medium, foreign-passport school running AP at scale is IICS.

Fees are in Turkish lira; USD figures move with the exchange rate. Conversions below use an indicative mid-2026 rate of roughly TRY 33 to USD 1.

The top tier

Five schools sit at the top by fees, results, and US-pathway credibility.

Robert College

Robert College is the oldest American school founded outside the United States, established 1863 above the Bosphorus. Today a Turkish lise regulated by MEB; language of instruction English, head American (Whitman Shepard). Ages 14 to 18 only. CIS. Fees TRY 744,000 to 1,729,000 (roughly USD 22,500 to 52,400). Cohort ~1,000.

Published 2025 SAT average: 1446, consistent with top-decile US private schools. Intake is selective by national exam (LGS); cohort quality drives outcomes as much as delivery. AP and IB Diploma offered alongside the Turkish certificate; strong candidates favour AP. Foreign passport holders cannot enter unless the child can sit LGS.

Üsküdar American Academy

Üsküdar American Academy is the second-oldest American foundation in Istanbul, established 1876 on the Asian side. MEB-regulated Turkish lise with English-medium instruction. Ages 13 to 18, selective by national exam. Head: Cory Carson. CIS. Fees TRY 867,000 to 1,431,000 (roughly USD 26,300 to 43,400). Cohort ~895.

Published 2021 IB DP average: 39.49 points, among the highest in Turkey and well above the 30.32 global average. AP also offered. The figure reflects a highly selective intake more than IB delivery alone; treat it as ceiling rather than median.

Istanbul International Community School (IICS)

IICS is the oldest international school in Turkey, founded 1911, and the only English-medium foreign-passport school in the city running AP. Full IB continuum plus AP. CIS and NEASC. Sarıyer main campus, second campus at Hadimköy. Head: Zeliha Öztürk. Ages 3 to 18. Fees TRY 886,000 to 1,883,000 (roughly USD 26,800 to 57,000). Cohort ~450.

Published 2020 IB DP average: 34 points, 91% pass rate, top score 40. The figure is stale; small cohorts swing year to year. For foreign-passport families needing a US-compatible transcript without a Turkish layer underneath, IICS is the only direct route.

Hisar School

Hisar Schools is a Turkish-American hybrid founded 1996 on the European side. MEB-regulated, English-immersion from primary upward, AP and IB at the upper school. CIS and NEASC. Head: Prof. Dr. Gülay Barbarosoğlu. Fees TRY 909,000 to 1,814,000 (roughly USD 27,600 to 55,000). Cohort ~2,200.

Hisar publishes AP rather than IB averages. 96% of AP exams scored 3 or above in 2024, 75% scored 4 or 5 across 517 exams, 51% scored 5 across 355 exams. SAT 2024 middle-50% across 72 test-takers: EBRW 590 to 730, Math 670 to 780, total 1250 to 1480. A US-pathway profile, and a strong one.

Koç School

Koç School is the academic benchmark of the Asian side, founded 1988 by the Koç family (Turkey's largest industrial group). MEB-regulated, dual Turkish-American, full IB continuum plus AP electives. CIS and NEASC. Head: Prof. Dr. Güray Erkol. Fees TRY 612,000 to 1,703,000 (roughly USD 18,600 to 51,600). Cohort ~2,000, ages 5 to 18.

Published 2021 IB DP average: 36 points, 100% pass rate, average subject score 5.71/7. The Tuzla campus is one of the best-resourced school sites in the country. Selective intake; destinations skew strongly into US and UK research universities.

Strong mid-tier

These schools carry a real American thread but sit below the top five on fees, scale, or international integration.

Sezin School

Sezin School sits on the Asian side, founded 1963. MEB-regulated, American-IB. CIS. Head: Vahdet Doğan. Fees TRY 681,000 to 1,582,000 (roughly USD 20,600 to 47,900). Cohort ~1,200.

Published 2024 IB DP average: 38 points, with *52% A\/A at A Level**. Top band of Istanbul schools for results, at fees roughly 20% below the international top tier. AP and SAT pathway runs alongside the Turkish high-school certificate.

ENKA Schools Istanbul

ENKA Schools Istanbul is the strongest value in the city for the full-continuum American-plus-IB pathway. Founded 1996. Full IB PYP through DP, plus AP. CIS and NEASC. Head: Dr. Esra Tara. Istinye campus. Fees TRY 549,000 to 1,023,000 (roughly USD 16,700 to 31,000). Cohort ~1,200.

Published 2022 IB DP average: 36.46 points. AP 2022: 100% pass rate. On a results-to-fees basis, ENKA is among the strongest value in the city for an English-strong, AP-available pathway without paying the international-school ceiling.

TED Istanbul College

TED Istanbul College is part of the TED (Türk Eğitim Derneği) network, founded 1998 on the Asian side. MEB-regulated Turkish-stream with IB and AP layered on top. CIS, NEASC, COBIS, BSO, and BSME (an unusually heavy accreditation stack). Head: Füsun Ersoy. Fees TRY 1,069,000 to 1,187,000 (roughly USD 32,400 to 36,000). Cohort ~1,800.

Published 2024 IB DP average: 38 points, with *52% A\/A at A Level**. Fee structure is unusually narrow: lower years cost almost the same as upper years, which makes TED strong value across a full enrolment.

Best for sixth form / AP track

For Year 12 and Year 13, the AP track in Istanbul concentrates in three schools:

  • Hisar School. The strongest published AP results in the city: 96% pass rate 2024, 75% scoring 4 or 5. SAT support tightly integrated.
  • Robert College. AP plus IB plus the Turkish certificate. SAT 2025 average 1446. National-exam entry only.
  • Üsküdar American Academy. AP plus IB. DP average 39.49 (2021). National-exam entry only.

IICS offers AP alongside the IB Diploma and is the only one open to foreign-passport entrants. Koç, ENKA, Sezin, and TED offer AP electives at the senior end, but the academic centre at these schools is the IB Diploma.

Best for early years / primary

The American thread in the early years is thin. The historic American foundations (Robert, Üsküdar) only start at age 13 or 14. Most American-style primary in Istanbul sits inside dual-MEB schools where Turkish curriculum dominates the early-years timetable.

  • IICS. Full English-medium PYP from age 3. The only foreign-passport school where a US-bound family can start at age 3 and stay through to AP in one institution.
  • Hisar School. Starts at age 3, English-immersion. Primary curriculum is Turkish national with American pedagogy layered on.
  • ENKA Schools. Full PYP from age 3, strong English provision, AP at the senior end. Strongest value on a results-to-fees basis for the long pathway.
  • Koç School. Starts at age 5, MEB-regulated, English-strong with American features at the senior end.

A child entering at age 3 expecting a pure American primary will only find that at IICS. The others deliver a bilingual experience with the American identity becoming visible from middle school upward.

How to tell a real American school

Three markers separate the genuine article from a school using the label loosely. Which a school carries shapes both the daily experience and the exit qualification.

  • Exit qualification. A US high-school diploma is transcript-based (GPA, course credits, recommendations). AP (Advanced Placement) is the College Board's subject-by-subject exam system scored 1 to 5, recognised by US universities and increasingly by UK and European ones.
  • Accreditation. The US signals are WASC, MSA-CESS, NEASC, and Cognia. Of Istanbul's American shortlist, NEASC holds at IICS, Hisar, Koç, ENKA, and TED. CIS sits alongside.
  • Pedagogy. K-12 grade structure, standards-based reporting, broad course load, heavy extracurriculars. Robert, Üsküdar, and IICS carry this through middle and high school. Dual-MEB schools blend it with a Turkish framework; the timetable looks American-shaped mainly in the senior years.

The MEB layer is the structural fact every Istanbul parent needs to grasp. Turkish private schools must deliver the Turkish national curriculum to Turkish citizens: Turkish history, literature, religion, citizenship, and the YKS exit exam for Turkish university entry. At Koç, Hisar, ENKA, Sezin, TED, and UAA, Turkish-stream students carry MEB content alongside AP and IB.

The only schools where the spine is genuinely American are IICS (foreign-passport, international throughout) and the senior years of Robert and UAA, where MEB content compresses and AP and IB dominate.

For a US university destination, this distinction matters less than it sounds. US admissions offices read AP, SAT, and IB scores fluently from MEB-licensed schools, as well as Cambridge IGCSE and A Level transcripts. What matters is the quality of college counselling, the track record with US institutions, and the credibility of recommender letters, not the label on the brochure.

How to choose between them

Five filters narrow eight schools to a usable shortlist:

  1. Passport status. Foreign-only family: IICS is the natural fit. Robert and UAA admit foreigners only via LGS, which is rare. Turkish or dual: the full list is open.
  2. Side of the city. European: IICS, Hisar, Robert, ENKA. Asian: Koç, Sezin, TED, UAA. Cross-Bosphorus school commutes are not viable.
  3. Age at entry. Age 3 onward: IICS, Hisar, ENKA, Sezin, TED. Age 5: Koç. Senior years only: Robert (14-18), UAA (13-18).
  4. Exit qualification. AP-led: Hisar, Robert, IICS. IB-led with AP electives: Koç, ENKA, Sezin, TED, UAA.
  5. Fee bracket. Above USD 50,000 ceiling: IICS, Hisar, Robert, Koç. USD 30,000 to 50,000: UAA, Sezin, TED. Below USD 30,000: ENKA. Ceilings reflect the senior year; primary fees are typically 40 to 50% lower.

A defensible shortlist for most families is two or three schools: one premium English-medium for cohort and portability, one dual-MEB with strong published results, and a backup at a different fee point.

FAQs

Is there a pure American school in Istanbul that does not run a Turkish curriculum? IICS is the closest. Founded 1911, it operates under foreign-school licensing rather than MEB and accepts foreign-passport holders. Robert College and Üsküdar American Academy are American foundations historically, but today they are MEB-licensed Turkish lises with English-medium instruction.

Can a Turkish citizen attend IICS? Generally no. IICS is licensed primarily for foreign-passport holders. Turkish citizens are typically required to attend an MEB-licensed school. Dual citizens should clarify their status with admissions before applying.

Which Istanbul school has the strongest US university placement record? Robert College and Üsküdar American Academy have the longest track records, both American foundations over 140 years old. Koç and Hisar also place strongly into US research universities, with Hisar's AP and SAT profile being the closest in published data to a US private school.

What is a strong AP score, and how does Istanbul compare? AP is scored 1 to 5; 3 or above is a pass and the threshold most universities recognise for credit; 4 or 5 is competitive at selective institutions. Hisar's 96% pass rate and 51% scoring 5 across 355 exams in 2024 sit in the top decile of international-school AP results globally.

Is the dual-MEB plus American model a handicap for US admissions? The published evidence suggests not. Hisar's SAT and AP results sit at the top of the international band. Koç, Sezin, TED, and ENKA all publish IB DP averages at or above 36. US admissions offices read AP, SAT, and IB scores fluently regardless of the Turkish layer underneath.
