Best American Schools in Guangzhou
AISG is the anchor: WASC-accredited, foreign-passport only, US transcript at scale. BASIS and Grace Academy round out the genuine American options.
The brief
- AISG (American International School of Guangzhou) is the only full-service American school in the city: WASC and CIS accredited, US transcript, AP and IB Diploma, foreign passport only. Profile.
- BASIS International School Guangzhou runs the most aggressive AP programme in the city: 51% of its 2024 cohort received a US Top 30 offer. Cognia accredited, open to local families.
- Guangzhou Grace Academy is the small Christian US-curriculum option, SAT-led, fees roughly half of AISG.
- Several schools sell themselves as American but run British, Canadian, or hybrid programmes. Read the fine print before you read the marketing.
- Post-2021 rules mean Chinese passport holders cannot enrol at AISG. Local families wanting US pathways route through BASIS, HFI, or Alcanta.
Guangzhou has one true American international school and a thin layer of schools selling AP as a senior-year add-on. The American International School of Guangzhou (AISG) sits alone at the top, foreign-passport-only by Chinese regulation, full WASC stack, forty-year track record. Everything below it is a Chinese-permitted school running AP courses inside a different framework (BASIS, HFI, Alcanta, Clifford), a small Christian school (Grace Academy), or a school whose "American" line is a marketing label over a Canadian or British spine.
The genuine American options separate on four lines: accreditation, AP depth, transcript credibility with US universities, and Chinese-passport access.
The top tier
American International School of Guangzhou (AISG) is the anchor. Founded 1981 by the US consulate community, around 1,081 students from 3 to 18 across Yuexiu and Huangpu campuses. Full American accreditation stack: CIS, WASC, plus Chinese MOE registration. US standards-based learning from Early Childhood through Grade 10, then AP and the IB Diploma side by side in Grades 11 and 12. Forbes ranked it #1 in South China in 2025; Hurun put it #1 in Guangzhou and #10 nationally. The 2025 IB Diploma average sat at 33.7, below Asian premium peers but credible. Fees CNY 229,280 to 303,900 (roughly USD 32,000 to 42,500).
Chinese passport holders are not eligible: Chinese law since 2021 has tightened on "international" schools registering Chinese citizens. AISG is foreign-passport-only by regulation, which keeps the student body genuinely international.
Strong mid-tier
BASIS International School Guangzhou is the most serious AP-track school in the city and the obvious choice for families locked out of AISG. Founded 2017 in Huangpu Science City, ~1,200 students, Cognia accredited. The signature BASIS model: AP-saturated, exam-driven, academically aggressive. Class of 2024: 47 graduates, 267 university acceptances, 51% with a US Top 30 offer, USD 1.12 million in scholarships. Fees CNY 211,200 to 280,500 (USD 29,500 to 39,200).
BASIS is not a US-style high school in feel. It's a high-stakes pipeline to selective US universities. Families wanting broad American extracurricular culture (sports, arts, the high-school-musical of it) will find AISG closer to that. Families wanting a results-led AP factory will find BASIS more honest about what it is.
Guangzhou Grace Academy is the small Christian US-curriculum school in Tianhe. ~400 students, founded 1994, average SAT over 1,300. Fees CNY 98,000 to 118,000 (USD 13,700 to 16,500), roughly a third of AISG. Student body is largely missionary and US expat families. Small scale brings limited AP options, a narrow co-curricular range, and an explicitly Christian frame.
Best for sixth form and AP track
For AP depth and US Top 30 placement, BASIS Guangzhou is the answer. The 2024 numbers are the strongest in the city. AISG also offers AP, but inside a balanced curriculum where students often take the IB Diploma instead. The aggressive AP-only track is BASIS.
AISG carries the brand recognition with US admissions offices: forty years of seeing AISG transcripts. BASIS carries the results. Grace Academy carries the SAT scores at smaller scale.
Two non-American-curriculum schools belong in this conversation. HFI International (SCNU-affiliated) in Tianhe runs A Level, AP, and NCUK pathways for Chinese students, with strong US placement. Alcanta International College in Nansha is IB + Cambridge + AP, MSA-CESS accredited, destinations include Cambridge, UCL, Johns Hopkins, and NUS. Both are realistic AP-capable routes for Chinese passport holders.
Best for early years and primary
AISG is the only school with a coherent American elementary experience from age 3: US-style primary with PYP overlay, full English-medium delivery, and a student body that turns over with expat assignments. For an American elementary classroom in Guangzhou, AISG is effectively the only option.
BASIS starts at age 4 but the elementary feel is academic-first, not the play-led American kindergarten most US parents expect. Grace Academy starts at 3 with small classes and a Christian frame. Below age 11, BASIS is a divisive fit: parents who want academic intensity early love it; parents who want a developmental American elementary look elsewhere.

How to tell a real American school
The label gets stretched in Guangzhou. Three markers separate the genuine from the lookalike.
Curriculum. A real American school organises by US K-12 grades, teaches to American standards, and exits students through an American high school diploma backed by AP exams or SAT/ACT. AISG and Grace Academy do this. BASIS does it in its own intense flavour. Schools that exit students through IGCSE, A Level, OSSD (Canadian), or the IB Diploma alone are not American-curriculum schools, regardless of marketing language. Alcanta, HFI, Clifford, and ISA Liwan fall into the "AP as an add-on" category, useful for US-bound students but not American-system schools.
Accreditation. WASC and Cognia are the two American accreditors that signal genuine US recognition. AISG holds WASC. BASIS Guangzhou and Clifford hold Cognia. Alcanta holds MSA-CESS, the other US regional accreditor, which carries similar weight. Schools without any of these are operating outside the US accreditation system.
Transcript portability. US universities want a US-format transcript with GPA, course rigour codes, and a counsellor letter written in the American admissions register. AISG, BASIS, and Grace Academy produce these natively. The Cambridge and IB schools translate, which works but adds friction.
The American model is broad and continuous assessment-led: a four-year high school transcript matters as much as the final exams, course rigour signals through AP, and admissions reads holistically. The British model exits through high-stakes terminal exams. The IB Diploma sits between, structurally guaranteeing breadth and exiting through a /45 points score. Curriculum culture, not the brand on the gate, should drive the school choice.
How to choose between them
The first filter is passport. Foreign passport: AISG is the default for a full American experience, and the question is whether budget, location, or fit pulls you elsewhere. Chinese passport: AISG is closed, and the realistic American-pathway shortlist is BASIS (AP-led, results-heavy) or Alcanta (broader, AP as one of three options), with HFI as the strong Chinese-leadership option in Tianhe.
The second filter is what kind of American school. AISG delivers the traditional US international experience: broad curriculum, balanced co-curricular, US-style counselling, IB or AP in senior years. BASIS delivers AP-saturated intensity with strong selective-US placement and less of the surrounding school culture. Grace Academy delivers a small Christian US school at a low price point. Three genuinely different products.
The third filter is money. AISG and BASIS sit in the same upper bracket. Grace Academy is roughly one-third of either. Alcanta and HFI sit below AISG and offer hybrid pathways. The fee spread across schools claiming American or near-American is wide: CNY 98,000 to over CNY 300,000.

FAQs
Is there a fully American school in Guangzhou? Yes, AISG. WASC and CIS accredited, US K-12 structure, AP plus IB Diploma in senior years, US-format transcripts. It is foreign-passport-only by Chinese regulation.
Can Chinese passport holders attend AISG? No. Since 2021, Chinese regulators have enforced rules preventing schools registered as foreign-international from enrolling Chinese citizens. The closest equivalents for Chinese passport holders are BASIS Guangzhou (AP-led) and Alcanta International College in Nansha (AP within an IB and Cambridge frame).
Which school is best for getting into a US Top 30 university? BASIS Guangzhou's published Class of 2024 numbers are the strongest: 51% of graduates received a US Top 30 offer, with USD 1.12 million in scholarships. AISG places consistently into top US universities at scale and carries longer-established name recognition with admissions offices. Both routes work.
Are Canadian and British schools in Guangzhou suitable for US universities? Yes. The IB Diploma and Cambridge A Levels are well understood by US admissions offices, and graduates from Alcanta, ISA Liwan, and CIS Guangzhou have placed at competitive US universities. The deciding factor is the quality of college counselling, not the curriculum label.
How do AISG and BASIS Guangzhou differ in feel? AISG is broad-base: standard breadth, balanced co-curricular, large expat staff body, twelve-year continuity. BASIS is AP-heavy, exam-driven, results-led. AISG looks like a US international school; BASIS looks like a US-curriculum exam-prep institution with international students.
What does the "WASC accredited" label mean for parents? WASC is one of the seven US regional accreditors. A WASC-accredited international school is recognised by US universities as equivalent to a US high school, so transcripts and diplomas need no translation. It signals governance, learning standards, and continuous-improvement processes have been independently reviewed against US norms.
