A British pre-prep in Minami Aoyama for children aged 18 months to 5, well placed for expat families in central Tokyo who want a tight, arts-rich early years setting.

Clarence delivers the EYFS framework across a four-floor building a short walk from Omotesando and Gaienmae stations. The arts run through the timetable, with literacy and numeracy taught alongside music, drama and movement. Class sizes are small and the cohort is heavily international. The location and feel attract families who have rejected larger nursery operations and want something more boutique.

Parents who land here tend to stay positive about the teachers and the atmosphere, with several saying their child settled faster than at previous nurseries. Critical voices exist but are the minority. The school stops at age 5, so this is a feeder rather than a full pathway, and families typically move on to the British School in Tokyo, KIST, ASIJ or one of the bilingual primaries. Pricing reflects the central Tokyo address.

  • A small British pre-prep school for ages roughly eighteen months to six years in Minami-Aoyama, with around 50 to 60 children, an arts-led EYFS programme, and class sizes near fifteen.
  • Directory reviews are short and overwhelmingly positive, focused on smooth settling-in for shy or reluctant children, friendly staff and an arts-rich daily routine.
  • One parent said they had visited more than thirty Tokyo international preschools before finding Clarence and signed up after the trial lesson; another said their daughter had cried for six months at her previous preschool but was singing on day one at Clarence.
  • One reviewer was sharply dismissive of the curriculum as overstated. The dissenting voice is real but isolated in the public pool.
  • Independent parent commentary is concentrated on a handful of directory sites with five-star ratings clustered around 2019-2020; there is little fresher, longer-form parent voice online.
