A British boarding school in Longhua linked to Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh, aimed primarily at Chinese families wanting a UK-style pathway without leaving Shenzhen.

Merchiston opened in August 2018 and runs Cambridge IGCSE plus A Level and AP at the senior end, with boarding from age 11. The campus sits in Dalang, Longhua, well away from the Shekou expat cluster, and the student body skews local rather than international. Headmaster Benjamin Webster runs a setup designed to import the Edinburgh house and pastoral system into a Chinese boarding context.

Parent feedback is mixed and noticeably more critical than the marketing sites suggest. Families who like the school point to a settled boarding feel and friendships across year groups. The recurring complaints are about leadership turnover, curriculum direction shifting, segregation between scholarship students and the main cohort, and house and extracurricular systems that promise more than they deliver. Families considering Merchiston should weigh the boarding offer carefully against day options closer to Shekou or Futian.

  • Parent reviews on directory sites are polarised, averaging around across a small pool.
  • Critics flag inexperienced management, frequent changes in curriculum direction and lack of staff continuity. One parent complaint cites poor swimming-pool hygiene and teaching quality.
  • Boarding draws warmer reviews. One parent said their daughter felt the boarding house was "a big family."
  • Teachers describe a cycle of advert-and-readvertise for the same roles, and one r/Internationalteachers commenter said the owner is "incompetent" but that things "seem to have turned around for now."
  • China-teaching forums group Merchiston with British chains accused of working staff hard.
