Shanghai Pinghe Bilingual School
Bilingual + IB DP + OSSD school in Pudong (Jinqiao/Huangyang Rd). IB World School.
In brief
Pinghe is one of the most sought-after bilingual schools in Shanghai. The Qingpu campus (K-9) is the newer offshoot of the original Pudong school, opened in 2020. It's not an Anglo "international school" - it's bilingual Chinese, with the curriculum and culture that implies.
The campus itself is genuinely striking. It's been called one of the world's top ten educational buildings, and the library is the bit everyone mentions first when they talk about it.
Academically the brand is strong. The original Pinghe sends a high share of its IB cohort to top US and UK universities, and parents in Shanghai treat the name as a signal of seriousness. Admissions are competitive - expect entry assessments and interviews even at kindergarten.
Be honest with yourself about fit. The student body is overwhelmingly Chinese, mostly from professional Shanghai families, and the academic register is high. According to one parent, the teachers "followed up with families on pretty much everything" - attentive, but also intense. One teacher review described it as "good but chaotic" behind the scenes, and a recurring theme from staff is that administration can feel thin and decisions shift.
If your child is bilingual or genuinely up for becoming so, and you want them embedded in a Shanghai-Chinese peer group with serious academics, Pinghe is a real contender. If you want a softer landing in a majority-expat environment with English as the dominant language, this isn't that school - and that's fine, just go in eyes open.
One practical note: there are two Pinghe campuses (Pudong and Qingpu) under related but distinct management. Worth checking which one is meant when people give you opinions - they're not interchangeable.

Reviews
- Pinghe is a private bilingual school in Jinqiao, Pudong, offering IB and A-level pathways at the upper end. One graduate described its high school as "purely IB/AP/A-level".
- Foreign teachers and parents place it as a happy middle between local schools and the top-tier international names. One teacher said friends working there "had their children enrolled" and were happy with the education.
- English-staff capacity is a recurring weak spot. One ex-student said the school is "very understaffed in terms of good English teachers".
- The campus sits in the Jinqiao cluster alongside SAS, Dulwich and Concordia, which graduates cite as a draw for cross-school activity.
