Non-profit American school founded in 1912, operating two campuses in Puxi and Pudong with around 2,700 students from Pre-K through Grade 12. Fees for 2025-2026 range from RMB 246,000 (Pre-K) to RMB 304,100 (High School) plus a one-time RMB 28,000-33,000…
In brief
The largest and most established international school in Shanghai, with twin Pudong and Puxi campuses, an American core, and full IB and AP options at the top.
SAS dates to 1912 and runs two large campuses, Pudong in Sanjiagang and Puxi in Huacao Town near Hongqiao. The school enrolls roughly 2,700 to 2,900 students across PK through 12. Curriculum is American with AP, supplemented by an IB Diploma option at high school. Accreditation is WASC and CIS. James Nelligan leads the school. The board includes a US Consulate General representative.
SAS sits at the top of Shanghai fees and parents describe the academic, sport and arts programmes as broad and well resourced, with multiple gyms, theatres and outdoor facilities at each campus. The Pudong campus draws families based around Jinqiao and Kangqiao, while Puxi serves Hongqiao and Minhang. Parent voice praises the music programme and the depth of options at high school. The recurring criticism is the size, with families wanting a smaller, more pastoral fit often pointing to Concordia in Pudong or Dulwich and Wellington in Puxi as alternatives.

Reviews
- Treated by teacher and parent threads as the salary and prestige benchmark of mainland China international schools. Compensation is described as best-in-region, with Reddit references to roughly 100,000 USD packages and free housing.
- Academic outcomes are a consistent positive. Parents and former staff cite a strong AP and IB Diploma programme and a steady record of 6 to 10 students a year going to Ivy League, Stanford or MIT from a graduating class of around 120.
- Demographic shift since COVID is the loudest critical theme. Multiple parent posts allege the campuses now run heavily Mandarin-speaking despite English-only policies, with one frequent commenter putting the figure at around 95 percent. Critics frame this as eroding the international experience.
- Commute is repeatedly flagged. Both Pudong and Puxi campuses are described as 45 minutes to an hour from central Shanghai, with the Puxi route singled out for heavy traffic.
- A 2025 alumnus comment alleged historical safeguarding failure relating to a former AP Literature teacher. The comment is uncorroborated in this dataset and concerns a specific past incident rather than current practice.
- Hiring threads describe both campuses as highly competitive with hundreds of applicants per opening; only one child of teaching staff receives full tuition benefit.
