SJIS opened in 2010 as Malaysia's first associate La Salle international school, an offshoot of the historic St. John's Institution founded in 1904. The school runs Cambridge primary and IGCSE through to A Level, and the IB Diploma in sixth form, on two campuses on Jalan Bukit Nanas next to the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve and KL Tower. Day-to-day life carries a Catholic Lasallian ethos, though the intake is broadly mixed.

Families speak warmly of the engaged primary teaching, the breadth of co-curricular activities including arts, drama and sports, and the central location for working parents. The criticism that surfaces most often is uneven discipline and pastoral handling at secondary. Parents weighing SJIS often compare it with Garden International, BSKL and Alice Smith for academic ceiling and university outcomes.

  • Parent voice on Kuala Lumpur platforms is split. Positive reviews praise the Bukit Nanas campus location, the warmth of the smaller community, and the academic-plus-sport balance.
  • Negative reviews are pointed: parents describe being ignored by leadership, primary classrooms where pupil questions were brushed off, and concerns about teacher qualifications, including newly-graduated staff teaching by reading from textbooks.
  • One recurring complaint touches teacher quality and accountability; this surfaces across multiple reviews rather than as a single outlier.
  • Some parents report strong individual teachers and visible academic progress; the polarisation suggests experience varies sharply by year group and teacher.
  • IB Diploma is the senior offer. Independent forum discussion is sparse outside aggregator pages.
