Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur

The Indonesian Embassy school in KL, running the Indonesian national curriculum from kindergarten through senior high for the Indonesian community in Malaysia.

Founded
1969

The Indonesian Embassy school in KL, running the Indonesian national curriculum from kindergarten through senior high for the Indonesian community in Malaysia.

SIKL was inaugurated in July 1969 under the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) and is formally recognised by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. It runs PG and TK (early years), SD (primary), and SMP and SMA (junior and senior high), using the Indonesian Kurikulum Merdeka. The school doubles as a cultural centre for the Indonesian diaspora and also hosts ICT and English training for Indonesian workers in Malaysia.

This is a school for Indonesian-passport families, not a general international option. Teaching is in Bahasa Indonesia. Families value the cultural continuity and the smooth transfer back into the Indonesian school and university system. Researchers studying SIKL have noted that infrastructure and facilities are modest compared with the larger international schools in KL, and teachers carry heavy workloads given the multi-level remit.

  • SIKL is an Indonesian government school operating under the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. The brief and audience are different from the wider international-school market.
  • The school exists for Indonesian families based in Malaysia who want a national curriculum pathway in Bahasa Indonesia. Cohort is large and uniform-heavy in the Indonesian state-school style.
  • Independent commentary is sparse and operational: one Reddit reference notes the state-school-style uniform reflects the size of the student body, another names SIKL as one of the official Indonesian polling stations in Malaysia.
  • Academic research on SIKL flags constraints rather than failings: limited infrastructure, longer-than-typical staff working hours, and the social adjustment for teachers posted from Indonesia. SIKL holds A-level accreditation from BAN across primary, junior and senior secondary.
  • Independent parent commentary in English is effectively absent. Families considering SIKL are usually comparing it with SIS in Singapore or with Indonesian state schools, not with international schools in KL.
