In brief
The Republic of China government's overseas Taiwanese school in Jakarta, founded January 1992 and the first Chinese-language school to open in Indonesia after the lifting of the ban on Mandarin instruction. Trilingual K1 to Grade 12.
JTS follows the Taiwanese national curriculum step by step, with examinations sat alongside schools in Taiwan. Roughly 70 percent of teaching is in Mandarin, 20 percent in English, and 10 percent in Bahasa Indonesia, with traditional characters and Zhuyin phonetics taught from kindergarten. Cambridge English and the Indonesian Merdeka curriculum are layered on top so students leave fluent in three languages.
Around 30 teachers and roughly 280 students at last count, with about two-thirds Taiwanese and the remainder local Chinese-Indonesian and other nationalities. Graduates split roughly 50-50 between Taiwanese universities and destinations in Europe, Australia, and North America. Best fit for Taiwanese families on Jakarta postings, ethnic Chinese-Indonesian families wanting a serious Mandarin-medium track, and anyone planning a Taiwan university route. The Mandarin demand is real, so families with no prior Chinese exposure tend to find the early years steep.
Reviews
- Taiwan-government school in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, teaching the Taiwanese curriculum in Traditional Chinese. Around 70% Mandarin, 20% English, 10% Bahasa Indonesia across the school day.
- Distinct from competitor Pahoa, which uses Simplified Chinese. Parents picking between the two often cite traditional vs. simplified script and Taiwan vs. China university routing as the deciding factor.
- Reported student culture is understated and disciplined. Students are described as low-key about wealth and very punctual, with structured lunch and nap routines.
- Roughly half of graduates head to Taiwanese universities, with the rest fanning out across Europe, Australia and the US.
- Indicative fees, around Rp 27-47 million per six months depending on year group, sit well below Jakarta's expat-tier schools.
- Independent parent review pool is thin in English. Strong fit for families wanting Mandarin in Traditional script and a Taiwanese cultural frame.
