Beijing International Bilingual Academy

One of Beijing's most popular international schools on ISD (ranked #3 in 2025), BIBA offers IB MYP and Diploma, IGCSE, and A-levels alongside US college prep, from Nursery through Grade 12. Optional boarding from Grade 6. Sits in Shunyi with…

Bilingual K-12 in Houshayu, Shunyi, founded in 2006 by Haijia Education and now around 1,700 students between two and eighteen. Curriculum runs Chinese national standards alongside US Common Core, IB MYP, IGCSE and a senior-school choice of IB Diploma or A-Levels.

Faculty is roughly half Chinese and half international, drawn from over 25 nationalities. WASC accredited, member of ACAMIS. Tuition runs from around 76,000 RMB in early years to 292,000 RMB in senior school, which is meaningfully below the cost of the fully expat-facing Shunyi names.

BIBA's distinctive offer is that it does the bilingual thing seriously: children leave with usable Mandarin and with internationally recognised diplomas, which is rarer than the marketing copy in this segment suggests. Parent voice is generally warm on the PTA culture and the breadth of co-curricular activities, with the standard large-school caveat that experience varies by homeroom team and division. A natural option for mixed-heritage families and for parents who want their children fluent in Chinese without giving up the IB or A-Level route.

  • Reddit comment is polarised. A 2022 Beijing parent put BIBA in an explicit 'avoid' list and another current staff member at a rival school called it a "total shit show".
  • Against that, a long 2024 post from the wife of a teacher with seven-plus years at BIBA describes engaged students and parents, a campus reinvested in each year, and a new MSHS principal she rates as data-driven; she also flags rapid growth, three principals in seven years, and frequent curriculum changes as the main downsides.
  • A 2025 Beijing teacher said friends at BIBA "say it's good" and grouped it with respected schools like Keystone in their casual tier list.
  • One former student who left after 2022/23 described management as "very disorganised" and recalled finishing exams a month and a half before term ended with no real teaching during the gap.
  • A 2020 candidate said BIBA cancelled their accepted contract without notice during early Covid, telling the recruiter they did not want to deal with American hires; the candidate later felt they had dodged a bullet.
  • Several commenters group BIBA with other Beijing bilingual schools (Beanstalk, BCIS) as solidly mid-tier rather than top-tier, with pay roughly 700,000 RMB and growing curriculum stack including A-Levels.
