Academia is worth a look for families arriving with teenagers who need British IGCSE or A-Levels quickly and don't want to wait for a place at Hull's or ISZN. It's a young school with a genuinely personal atmosphere - small enough that your child won't be a face in a crowd.

Academia opened in 2019 on Binzmuhlestrasse near Oerlikon S-Bahn station - two stops from Zurich Hauptbahnhof - and positions itself as the accessible British secondary option on the north side of the city. With 100+ students across Lower Secondary, IGCSE, and A-Level, it operates at roughly a third of Hull's scale and has a different feel: fewer traditions, more flexibility at point of entry, and a management team that handles the kind of mid-year admissions that larger schools routinely decline. The rooftop terrace, modern classrooms, and a run of extracurricular clubs (MUN, Business, Cooking) give the campus a usable feel despite the city-centre building.

Results are genuinely encouraging for a school this young: a 4.2 out of 5 rating on iSchoolAdvisor from 15 families, with consistent praise in Google reviews for individual teacher support, exam preparation quality, and university placements. The lower secondary pathway - Years 7-9 - feeds directly into IGCSE without an entrance exam, which is a practical advantage for families whose child is mid-secondary and needs a bridge year before the public exams. Head of School Celina Steiner leads a team of 22 teachers; the staff-to-student ratio is meaningfully higher than at comparable secondary schools.

The school was founded only in 2019, which means the track record at A-Level is still building - ask admissions for specific leavers' destination data and recent IGCSE subject results before committing. The Oerlikon area is functional rather than beautiful: industrial-residential mix, good public transport, but not the lakeside setting of Wollishofen or Kusnacht. Fees are flat at CHF 28,800 across all year groups, which is notably lower than Hull's CHF 30,800-32,000, making it competitive on cost for a British secondary in Zurich.
