In Brief

If your family speaks German or you want your child to study German in a rigorous German-state-accredited environment - and Prague is a multi-year posting - DSP is the obvious choice. For most English-speaking relocating families, the language barrier makes it a non-starter.

Deutsche Schule Prag is not an international school in the conventional sense. It's a German federal overseas school, part of the same ZfA network as German schools in Madrid, Singapore and Buenos Aires, operating under German federal supervision with teachers seconded from Germany. The curriculum leads to the German International Abitur, recognised by German universities and accepted by most European and international institutions. The school has held the 'Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule' quality seal since 2009, reflecting Bund-Lander inspection results. Around 600 students from kindergarten through Gymnasium attend the single Jinonice campus in Prague 5.

The practical reality is that this school runs in German. Kindergarten and primary instruction is in German; gymnasium classes are predominantly German. Czech is taught as a mandatory second language, and many students are bilingual Czech-German from mixed families or Czech families seeking German-language education. A German-track gymnasium and a Czech-track gymnasium run in parallel, with fees at CZK 155,000-193,750 per year for the academic programmes - significantly below the English-medium international schools. A Vorkurs (German prep course) is available for CZK 15,000/year for new students building their language skills.

A new school building is under construction on the Jinonice site, adding capacity for kindergarten and primary. The community is notably German-Czech, with a strong parent association and active cultural exchange. Families from German-speaking countries, Germany-linked companies, and Czech families seeking the Abitur pathway make up the core demographic. Worth visiting if German is your family's working language, but for most relocating English-speaking families, the language-of-instruction reality means another Prague school will be a better fit.

What parents value
  • German federal overseas school, ZfA-accredited. Abitur recognised internationally. 'Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule' seal since 2009. Partial federal subsidy keeps fees well below English-medium peers.
  • Single campus in Prague 5 Jinonice, close to metro B (Nove Butovice). New building under construction to expand kindergarten and primary capacity.
  • Fees of CZK 155,000-245,000 per year are among the lowest in Prague for a structured K-18 programme. Czech-track gymnasium option for families seeking bilingual Czech-German education.
Points of consideration
  • Instruction is in German throughout. Not suitable for families without German language - English is not the medium of instruction and this is not a bilingual English-German school.
  • The student community is primarily German and Czech, rather than a broad multi-nationality mix. The school is relatively small and culturally specific.
  • We could not find independent parent reviews beyond general community commentary. Visit the school and speak with current families to understand whether the culture fits your family.
