In Brief
Peponi is for secondary students only - Years 9 to 13 - and it is the most ambitious boarding school in Kenya by exam results and fees. If your child is 13 or older, you want full boarding in a rural setting, and you're prepared to pay at the upper end of the Nairobi market, it deserves serious consideration.
Peponi School sits on the Thika Superhighway in Ruiru - about 25 kilometres north of the Nairobi CBD - and takes students from Year 9 (age 13) to Year 13 only. It is not a through-school; if you have younger children, Peponi House in the Westlands area is the associated prep school. The main school publishes strong IGCSE and A-Level results annually, holds an ISI inspection report, and charges accordingly: day fees run to KES 2,929,110 per year, full boarding to KES 4,361,610. That puts it ahead of Brookhouse Karen on fees and broadly level with ISK for older secondary students.
The campus culture is shaped by boarding. Five boarding houses - Sedge, Chala, Elementaita, Jipe, and Magadi - give the school a distinct house-system identity. The Hog Charge, a student-organised charity event inspired by the Rhino Charge rally, has become a defining part of Peponi life and reflects an unusually entrepreneurial co-curricular culture. Rural surroundings mean sport, outdoors, and independence are embedded in daily life rather than bolted on. Families who board here consistently mention strong staff-student relationships and a genuine community feel that differs from the more transactional atmosphere of urban day schools.
The rural location is the central trade-off. Ruiru is not central to any Nairobi suburb and the school functions as a full boarding environment rather than a day-school-with-boarding-option. Weekly boarding fees of KES 4,120,485 per year still represent a significant outlay even for families who want students home at weekends. The refundable caution deposit of KES 500,000 to KES 700,000 is required upfront. Day places exist but are less common; if proximity to home and daily pick-up matter, this is not the school to shortlist.
What parents value
- –Consistently strong IGCSE and A-Level results published annually. ISI-inspected. Dedicated secondary-only (Years 9-13) focus means teaching and pastoral resources are concentrated on that age group.
- –Full boarding culture with five named houses, rural 25-acre campus on the Thika Superhighway. Strong outdoor and co-curricular identity, including the student-run Hog Charge charity event.
- –Day fees (KES 2,929,110/year) and boarding fees (up to KES 4,361,610/year) include a sibling discount of 5% for the second child and 10% for the third and beyond.
Points of consideration
- –Secondary only - Years 9-13. No primary or junior school on the same campus. Younger siblings or children below Year 9 must attend a separate school.
- –Ruiru location is not convenient for daily commuting from most Nairobi suburbs. The school is best treated as a full or weekly boarding placement rather than a day option.
- –Upfront caution deposit of KES 500,000-700,000 is required on acceptance. Factor this into your initial budget alongside the first term's fees.
