In Brief

If your children are French-educated or you are relocating from France, this is the obvious choice in Muscat. It is also genuinely worth considering for multilingual families who want a rigorous academic foundation in French alongside English and Arabic - but walk in clear-eyed about the size and the limited independent parent commentary available.

Lycee Francais International de Mascate is the only school in Oman operating under the French Ministry of Education framework through the AEFE network, which means curriculum continuity for families moving between France, French-speaking countries, and the Gulf. The school moved to a new campus at Muscat Hills in Airport Heights (Al Athaiba) which gives it significantly better facilities than the previous site. With around 271 students from 19 nationalities, it is a small school by Muscat standards - the average class size of 17 is among the lowest in the city. Languages are central: French, English, and Arabic from kindergarten, with Spanish or German from Grade 6 and Latin from Grade 7.

The academic programme leads to the French Brevet in Grade 9 and the Baccalaureate in Grade 12. The school also prepares students for IELTS, DELF, DELE, and CIMA certificates, so graduates are positioned for French higher education as well as international universities. The school reports a 100% post-secondary education placement rate and cites placements at McGill and other competitive institutions. Students do not need to be French-speaking on entry - the school provides support for non-French speakers, which means it is accessible to multilingual families who are not coming from the French system.

Fees run from OMR 3,526 in the early years to OMR 5,816 in the senior years, which sits in the mid-range for Muscat. The first-time registration fee is OMR 1,000, plus a refundable deposit of OMR 400. There are no published parent reviews on International Schools Database. The small community is a genuine asset for some families and a limitation for others - there is no school bus service, which matters if you are not near Airport Heights. The school is segregated by curriculum from the wider Muscat community, and children leaving may need transition support if moving to a non-French system.

What parents value
  • Only AEFE-network French school in Oman. Full curriculum continuity for French-educated families relocating to or from Muscat. Leads to Brevet and Baccalaureate.
  • Small school with average class size of 17 on a new campus in Muscat Hills. French, English, and Arabic from kindergarten; Spanish or German from Grade 6.
  • Open to non-French speakers with language support in place. Airport Heights campus is well-positioned for families in that corridor of Muscat.
Points of consideration
  • No school bus service. Families not based near Airport Heights / Al Athaiba will need to arrange their own transport - worth mapping before enrolling.
  • Limited independent parent review data. The school is small and ISD shows no published reviews. Visit the school and speak to current families before committing.
