In Brief
If you want a British curriculum with a proven exam track record and your family is on a corporate package, BSM is the natural first call in Muscat. If you're self-funding with younger children, compare fees with ABA before deciding.
BSM is the oldest and most established British school in Oman, and it occupies that position with some justification. It operates as a not-for-profit, which means surpluses go back into the school rather than to shareholders - an unusual arrangement in the Gulf that families on longer postings tend to appreciate. The campus in Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos has been steadily upgraded over the past decade and now includes three swimming pools, a theatre, and 10 science labs. The 2026 British Schools Overseas inspection rated it exemplary.
Academic results are consistently strong. In 2025, 72% of A-Level students achieved A*-B and 98% of GCSE students hit Grade 4 or above - figures that compare well against British international schools across the Middle East. The school runs from FS1 through Year 13 and the primary section is generally well regarded; the senior school is more departmentalised, which suits some families and not others. Pastoral care in the senior years is worth asking about on your visit.
The main trade-off is cost structure. Fees rise steeply in the senior years, and the infrastructure fee - OMR 300 per term for the first nine terms - adds meaningfully to early years costs. Some families we've heard from note the school feels large and that community cohesion can vary by year group.
What parents value
- –Consistently strong GCSE and A-Level results, with independent BSO inspection confirming exemplary status. One of the top-ranked British international schools in the Middle East.
- –Not-for-profit governance: all surplus reinvested in the school. Campus includes three pools, a theatre, and 10 science labs.
- –Broad curriculum from age 3 to 18 under one roof, including a Sixth Form with A-Level and BTEC options.
Points of consideration
- –Infrastructure fee adds OMR 2,700 over the first nine terms per child on top of tuition. Worth factoring into your total-cost calculation before comparing with other schools.
- –Senior school pastoral care is worth discussing on tour - ask how the school handles issues across year groups and how responsive leadership is when problems arise.
