In Brief

The only Munich school where your child can sit both the IB Diploma and the Abitur in the same programme - worth considering if you want German university recognition alongside international credentials, and fees are genuinely lower than MIS or BIS.

Nymphenburger Schulen is a private Gymnasium in the Nymphenburg district, near the palace, that became an IB World School in 2012. The school offers both the German Abitur and the IB Diploma Programme; students in the upper school can pursue the full dual award or, since 2024, can take the IB as a Course Candidate by choosing at least two DP subjects alongside the Abitur. The 2024 graduating cohort averaged an IB score of 31 points (above the global average of 30.3) and an Abitur of 1.95 - both solid results for a school this size.

The campus is a full Ganztagsschule - a full-day school with afternoon activities, electives and pastoral provision built in. The school was nominated for Germany's Deutsche Schulpreis 2026, landing in the national top 20 out of 87 schools, which reflects a reputation for teaching quality that goes beyond the IB credential. There is a basketball programme run with the NBA Basketball School Germany, an active arts scene and annual project week. A fee-reduction scheme is available for households earning under EUR 80,000 gross; the process is means-tested and applied individually.

Fees are lower than Munich's dedicated international schools: EUR 11,082-12,324 per year, plus EUR 4,000 per year for IB students in the Diploma cohort. One-time admission fees are graded by year of entry (EUR 500 at Year 5, rising to EUR 3,000 for Year 10 and above). The school operates in German and English - this is a German private school that offers the IB, not an international school. Families whose children have no German at all will find it difficult; contact admissions early to discuss language support options.

What parents value
  • Dual IB Diploma and German Abitur in one programme - the only school in Munich offering this combination, giving graduates strong options at both German and international universities.
  • Nominated for Deutsche Schulpreis 2026 top 20 nationally; income-based fee reductions available for households under EUR 80K gross.
  • Annual fees EUR 11,082-15,082 (before IB surcharge) - lower than MIS or BIS for comparable year groups, with a means-tested reduction scheme.
Points of consideration
  • IB Diploma cohort pays an additional EUR 4,000 per year on top of standard tuition - factor this into your total cost planning. One-time admission fees range from EUR 500 to EUR 3,000 depending on entry year.
  • Instruction is primarily in German; this is a German Gymnasium with IB, not an English-medium international school. Children without a working level of German will face a steep adjustment.
