In Brief
If your child's schooling is in French or you are tracking toward a French university, LFM is the only serious option in Madrid - and at 4,100 students it is the largest French school in the world, which brings both scale and the full Baccalaureat pathway from age 3. If French is not your priority, the fee savings versus the British schools are real but the limited online community makes it harder to get a read on day-to-day quality before you arrive.
LFM has operated in Madrid since 1882 - it predates most other international schools in the city by decades. Run directly by AEFE (the French government's overseas education agency) rather than by a private group, it follows the French national curriculum exactly: Maternelle, Elementaire, College, then Lycee finishing with the Baccalaureat. Two campuses serve different age ranges: Conde de Orgaz in Hortaleza handles Maternelle through Terminale, while the Saint-Exupery campus in Alcobendas (within La Moraleja) takes Maternelle through 5eme. Families enrolled at Saint-Exupery transfer to Conde de Orgaz for secondary.
The school's scale - 4,100 students across both sites - means it operates like a small town. Resources are strong where it matters: science labs, a theatre, extensive sports facilities, and language teaching that combines French with English and Spanish. The AEFE network gives students genuine portability; a family relocating from Paris, Lyon or Dakar can slot a child in at the right year level without curriculum disruption. Fees are noticeably lower than most comparable international schools in Madrid, which makes it accessible to families not on generous relocation packages.
The honest limitation is information scarcity. LFM has very few published parent reviews in English - around four in total across review platforms we could find - which makes it difficult to get a realistic picture of pastoral care, class dynamics or how the school handles problems. The campus address near Conde de Orgaz has constrained street access and parking is regularly difficult at school-start and finish times. If your family does not have French as a strong working language, ask the school directly how non-Francophone new arrivals are supported in the early months.
What parents value
- –Fees run EUR 6,200-7,650 per year across all year levels - substantially lower than British and IB schools in La Moraleja. State subsidy from the French government keeps costs down for families paying directly.
- –Direct AEFE operation means the curriculum is identical to schools in France. Families with ties to the French system can move to or from Madrid with no academic disruption for their children.
- –Full Maternelle-to-Baccalaureat pathway on one campus at Conde de Orgaz. The Baccalaureat is recognised by Spanish and international universities, and LFM's results feed into the French grandes ecoles network.
Points of consideration
- –The Conde de Orgaz campus sits off a narrow access road in the Hortaleza district. Arriving by car at peak drop-off is frustrating - the nearest metro is a 15-minute walk. If you live outside north Madrid, confirm the school bus covers your area.
- –English-language reviews are almost non-existent, which makes advance due diligence harder than at the British schools. Plan a campus visit and speak to current families in person before enrolling - this is more important here than at schools with published review histories.
