In brief
Founded in 1940 as the first British school in Spain, formerly British Council School and now trading as The British School after separating from the British Council. Settled in Somosaguas, Pozuelo de Alarcón, around 12 km from central Madrid.
Bilingual British curriculum with roughly 80 percent of teaching in English from age 2 to 16 and Spanish language and humanities alongside. Senior students take Cambridge Advanced, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford AQA exam routes. BSO inspected. Fees announced from around 5,100 euros in early years to 14,000 euros at the top, modest for a name-brand British school.
One of the most established names in the city, with deep alumni networks across Madrid professional life. Families value the long teaching tenure and the bilingual exit, where students leave genuinely fluent in both languages. The campus is a drive from central Madrid, so the school suits families based on the west side or willing to take the bus routes from Pozuelo. Best fit for Spanish and bicultural families wanting a British education without leaving the Spanish system entirely.

Reviews
- Parents and commenters treat the British Council School in Somosaguas as one of Madrid's two main English-medium schools, routinely recommending it to families with the budget.
- Parents note a long-running diplomatic and Real Madrid intake, with anecdotes of footballers' and politicians' children attending; one ex-pupil describes the school positively in passing.
- Independent parent reviews are scarce: one listings service shows three reviews averaging but does not display the text; another shows none.
- Member-only teacher reviews are weighted critical, with preview lines including 'There is a culture of fear that exists at the British Council School,' that staff feel 'not trusted but subjected to' management, and that the school is 'so inadequately run' for its size; one preview describes hardworking staff and 'great' children.
- Staff reviews of British Council Spain (covering language centres alongside the school) number 1,000+, averaging, with Madrid-specific complaints citing 'management only passionate about making money,' favouritism, stagnant pay and burnout, alongside praise for colleagues and professional development.
Positives
- Default English-medium choice in Madrid. Reddit posters comparing Madrid school options regularly point to the British Council School as the main English-language private school for families who can afford it.
Considerations
- High-status intake. Posters mention diplomats, footballers and political families among parents; the school sits in Somosaguas to the west of central Madrid.
- Internal culture for staff. Member-only ISR teacher reviews and Indeed posts describe a culture of fear, distrust and what staff call inadequate management for a school of its size.
- Fees and value. Reddit posters frame it as a premium option that requires a real budget; no specific parent value criticism surfaces in public threads.
