  • Parents and old boys consistently describe a strong sporting culture, with rugby and cricket sides that travel for international fixtures and compulsory extra-curricular sport.
  • Reviews praise teaching staff and pastoral support; one parent wrote of "tremendous progress" in both academic and personal growth.
  • The Catholic Marist character (humility, simplicity, modesty) shows up in how parents describe school identity, not just marketing copy.
  • Notable alumni include Test cricketer Temba Bavuma, which one ex-pupil flagged; the school's profile in Johannesburg sport runs deep.
  • Boys-only, English-medium, Inanda (Sandton) location. No serious recurring complaint pattern surfaces in open forums.

Positives

  • Sport and competitive culture. Strong rugby and cricket programmes, compulsory extra-curricular sport, and inter-school rivalry feature heavily in old-boy and parent posts.
  • Teaching staff and pastoral care. Parents describe staff as supportive and dedicated, with visible academic and personal growth in their sons.

Considerations

  • Catholic Marist identity. Catholic boys' school grounded in Marist values; this character shapes day-to-day life, not just the prospectus.
  • Boys-only environment. Single-sex boys' school in Sandton. Parents looking for co-ed should rule it out at the door.

Leadership

Mike Thiel

Mike joined St David’s as Headmaster of the High School in January 2014, and took on the additional role of Executive Headmaster in 2015. Educated at Christian Brothers’ College, Kimberley and the University of Cape Town, Mike has since been headmaster at St Patrick’s CBC Kimberley, Clifton College, Durban and the Dominican Convent School in Johannesburg inner-city. Mike believes strongly in the role of independent education to transform South African society and is committed to innovative educational structures to achieve this, with the work of the Foundation being critical to do this in the St David’s context. Mike is married and has four children from ages 26 to 13, with whom he enjoys time away in the bush, at the beach and reading.
