SAHETI is one of Johannesburg's most distinctive co-educational IEB schools - academically strong, with a genuinely unusual Greek-heritage ethos, and some of the most competitive fees per academic outcome in the East Rand independent sector. It is the right choice for East Rand families who want rigorous IEB with cultural depth and do not need boarding.

SAHETI was founded in 1974 by George Bizos - the human rights lawyer best known for representing Nelson Mandela - and grew from the South African Hellenic Educational and Technical Institute into the full independent school it is today. The school serves around 1,300 students from Playschool (14 months) through Grade 12 in a co-educational setting, with a campus in Senderwood, Bedfordview. The Greek heritage is not merely historical; it shapes the school's emphasis on classical learning, active citizenship, and the arts alongside a standard IEB programme. Executive Head Morag Rees leads a school that draws students from across the East Rand as well as from central Johannesburg families seeking an alternative to the larger chain schools.

The 2025 matric results are among the strongest on this guide for a mid-fee IEB school: 71 candidates, 100% pass rate, 235 distinctions, 3.3 average distinctions per student, and 24% of the class ranked in the top 1% nationally. Six students achieved full-house distinction passes across all subjects. These figures place SAHETI's academic output well above what its fee level might suggest. Fees in 2026 run from ZAR 67,459 (Playschool) to ZAR 192,019 (Grades 10-12), with a ZAR 5,000 Capital Development Levy per year and a deposit of one term's fees on enrolment.

The trade-off is practical: SAHETI does not offer boarding, and its Senderwood campus is in the eastern suburbs, which adds commuting time for families based in Sandton, Fourways, or the northern suburbs. The school sits in the same suburb as St Andrew's School for Girls, so families on the East Rand choosing between a co-ed and a girls'-only school will have both campuses available for a single visit. The Greek ethos and the active Hellenic alumni community are assets that appeal to some families and are largely invisible to others - visit the campus and attend an open day before forming a view.
