In Brief
Roedean is Johannesburg's top IEB girls' school by results and reputation. If you have a daughter and academic outcomes matter alongside a strong boarding option, it deserves serious consideration. Ask about the pastoral and social culture on a tour - the school has a particular character that families either respond to strongly or don't.
Roedean SA is one of South Africa's most established girls' schools, with a direct historical link to Roedean Brighton and a campus on Princess of Wales Terrace in Parktown that has been there since 1903. The school is girls-only from Grade 0 (age 5) through Matric, offers both day and boarding from Grade 3 upwards, and runs the IEB matric as its sole exit qualification. The 2025 matric results were exceptional: 73 candidates, 100% bachelor's pass rate, 307 distinctions, 37 A averages, and 8 candidates in the top 1% nationally in the IEB.
The campus has been through significant investment in recent years - an aquatic centre, music centre, and library upgrade are among the more visible additions. Lindi Dlamini leads as Executive Director (since January 2023), with Phuti Mogale heading the Senior School from 2025. The school holds Round Square membership, which gives access to international exchanges, service programmes, and conferences - a genuine differentiating feature for families with daughters who are outward-looking and want exposure beyond the Johannesburg circuit. The community is tight-knit in the way that single-sex boarding schools tend to be.
Fees run from ZAR 121,638 (Grade 0) to ZAR 233,104 (Grades 10-12), with boarding adding ZAR 143,994-179,991 per year. That puts Roedean among Johannesburg's most expensive day schools at senior level. The school is in Parktown, which is geographically central but south of where many Johannesburg international families are based - families in Sandton or the northern suburbs should factor commute time on William Nicol or Jan Smuts at drop-off. Welfare and pastoral culture is worth exploring on a visit - the school has high expectations socially and academically, and families say it rewards daughters who are driven and self-contained.
What parents value
- –Outstanding 2025 IEB results: 100% bachelor's pass, 307 distinctions from 73 candidates, 37 A averages, 8 top-1% nationally. The academic floor is among the highest of any South African school.
- –Round Square membership opens international exchanges and service programmes that few Johannesburg schools can match. Strong for girls with leadership ambitions beyond the classroom.
- –Active boarding community from Grade 3. Termly and weekly boarding options, music centre, and aquatic centre on a historic campus in central Johannesburg.
Points of consideration
- –Girls only from Grade 0 to Matric. Not suitable for families with sons, or those who prefer co-education for social development reasons.
- –Parktown location is south of most northern-suburbs families. Sandton and Fourways commutes involve Corlett Drive or William Nicol at peak hours - factor 30-45 minutes each way.
- –Pastoral culture and social expectations are worth probing on a campus visit. The school suits academically focused and self-motivated girls well; ask about pastoral support structures for students who find the environment demanding.
