The French school of Istanbul, an AEFE-network lycée running the full French national curriculum from preschool through the baccalauréat. The current institution dates to 1962, with antecedents going back to wartime classes at the French Consulate in 1942.

Pierre Loti runs across two campuses: Beyoglu (Tom Tom) for kindergarten through Grade 3, and Tarabya in Sariyer for Grade 4 through terminale. Around 1,400 students of more than a dozen nationalities, with about a third from Turkish-origin families. The school is parent-managed and conventioned with AEFE, applying official French programmes. Fees are roughly TRY 441,000 to TRY 483,000, sitting well below the Anglo international schools.

Pedagogy follows the French Ministry framework, which means a more academic, less progressive feel than the IB schools, and a clear pipeline into French and European universities. Families on a French-system journey choose Pierre Loti for continuity with home. Expansion of the Tarabya site has been a long-running priority. Best fit for French and francophone families, and Turkish families committed to a fully French-language education.

  • The default French-curriculum option for families in Istanbul, run across two sites: Beyoğlu (preschool through CM1) and Tarabya (CM2 to Terminale).
  • Around 1,300-1,400 students. Parent-managed conventionné lycée inside the AEFE network.
  • Strong baccalauréat results in 2025: 98% pass, 84% with mention.
  • Expat.com threads describe registration around €2,500 plus tuition near €5,000, with some parents calling fees high and the school poorly organised on day-to-day matters (transport, canteen, after-school activities). Other parents say fees are acceptable when the employer reimburses.
  • Active parent association (Papillon d'Istanbul) runs anti-bullying conferences and positive-discipline workshops, indicating those are live concerns.
  • A Reddit user posting in French confirmed the intake is mixed-international (French, Syrian, Algerian, Belgian, Lebanese).

Positives

  • Academic results. 98% bac pass rate and 84% mention rate in 2025.
  • Diversity of intake. Genuinely multinational student body, not a French-only enclave.

Considerations

  • Cost and value. Fees considered high by self-funding families; manageable when subsidised by employers. Complaints about extras like transport and canteen being charged separately.
  • Organisation. Repeated parent complaints on community discussions about administrative organisation and limited extracurriculars compared to other internationals.
  • Safeguarding focus. Parent association regularly programmes anti-harcèlement and discipline-management sessions.
