In Brief

If your family is connected to France - French passport, prior French schooling, or a professional posting that includes French education support - Pierre Loti is the clear and only answer in Istanbul. For families without that connection, the language barrier and Tarabya location make it a narrow fit.

Lycee Francais Pierre Loti is Istanbul's only school in the AEFE network (Agency for French Education Abroad) - the French government's worldwide system of accredited French schools. Founded in 1962, the school runs from Maternelle (age 3) through the French Baccalaureat (age 18) across two campuses: a nursery and primary campus in Beyoglu, and the main campus for CM2 through Lycee in Tarabya, Sariyer. Around 1,188 students are enrolled, making it one of Istanbul's larger international schools. Guillaume Mouette is the current principal. Turkish is taught from pre-school as a required subject; English is introduced from primary; German and Spanish are available from secondary.

Fees are billed in EUR and set at different rates for French nationals, Turkish nationals, and other nationalities - a standard AEFE structure. For 2025-2026, fees run from roughly EUR 7,500 (French nationals, primary) to EUR 11,310 (other nationals, Lycee). At an EUR/USD rate of around 1.09, that puts the all-in cost in the US$11K-US$13K range for most year groups - notably lower than the British or IB schools at the same age. A 10% discount applies if fees are paid in full at registration; a 15% sibling exemption from the third child is available. Payment is by EUR bank transfer.

A 2024 diplomatic discussion between the French and Turkish governments concerned Turkish student enrolment at French state schools in Turkey. The matter was resolved by August 2024 and the school continues to operate normally. It is worth asking the admissions team directly about the current status of Turkish student enrolment and any ongoing policy considerations - not because there is a current problem, but because the episode was visible enough that informed families will have seen it, and the school's response is informative about how they communicate under pressure.

What parents value
  • The only AEFE-accredited French school in Istanbul - the sole option for families whose child is already in the French national curriculum and needs continuity. The Baccalaureat is a fully recognised French qualification, not a local approximation.
  • Fees from around EUR 7,500 to EUR 11,310 per year (depending on nationality and year group) are meaningfully lower than comparable-age British or IB programmes in Istanbul. The 10% full-payment discount and sibling structure reduce costs further.
  • Turkish taught from Maternelle, English from primary, German and Spanish from secondary - the linguistic range is broader than most expat schools in Istanbul, and the French Baccalaureat is internationally recognised for European university entry.
Points of consideration
  • French is the language of instruction. Children without strong French face a steep intake challenge regardless of age. Confirm the school's EAL support offer and language assessment process before applying for a non-French-speaking child.
  • The main secondary campus is in Tarabya, Sariyer - roughly 25-30 km north of the city centre and around 40-45 minutes from most of the Bosphorus corridor at school hours. Visit the Tarabya campus specifically if your child is CM2 or above; the Beyoglu campus is compact and only covers the younger years.
  • Ask the school directly about the current status of Turkish student enrolment following the 2024 French-Turkish diplomatic discussions. The situation was resolved, but understanding the school's policy and how they handled the episode is useful context for any family committing to a long enrolment.
