In Brief

UNIS is the school most parents in Hanoi's international community would choose if a place were available. The waitlist is real - apply early, and have a backup plan.

Hanoi's oldest international school and the one with the longest waiting list is not a coincidence. UNIS runs a genuinely not-for-profit model under UN principles, with a 60-nationality student body and a hard cap of 20% for any single nationality - so no one culture dominates the corridors. It was the first IB World School in Asia to offer all three programmes, and the breadth of the curriculum reflects that heritage.

The Ciputra campus in Tay Ho is spacious and continually upgraded: a 400-seat arts theatre, full-size sports fields, 25m pool, and the GAIA environmental learning space. Class sizes stay at 16-22, and the school's mentoring model means students have a named adult tracking their social and academic progress throughout middle and high school. The 2021 cohort hit a 100% IB pass rate with 40% scoring 40 or more points.

The catch is availability. Spaces, particularly at primary level, are limited and often filled from within the school's existing community. Fees are set in US dollars, so VND-paying families face currency exposure - at 2026 rates, Grade 11-12 tuition runs close to US$39,870 per year, the highest in the city. One-time fees add another US$2,350 on top.

What parents value
  • Genuinely diverse community with no nationality exceeding 20% of enrolment. Over 60 countries represented, with strong Vietnamese representation alongside expat families.
  • Not-for-profit governance with a Board of Directors. Surplus goes back into the school rather than to a parent company - campus facilities reflect decades of reinvestment.
  • Strong university destinations. Graduates go on to US, UK, and Korean universities; the school's IB track record and US-recognised accreditation (WASC) supports college applications across multiple systems.
Points of consideration
  • Waitlists at primary are long and move slowly. Register as soon as you know your move date, and contact the admissions team directly about current space availability by grade.
  • Fees are denominated in US dollars. For families paid in VND, annual fluctuation in the exchange rate adds unpredictable cost. The 2026-27 Grade 1-5 tuition of US$33,330 converts to roughly VND 833 million at current rates.
  • The school is in Ciputra, Tay Ho - convenient for families in the northern expat cluster but a long commute from Ha Dong, My Dinh, or south of Hoan Kiem. Check the bus service routes before choosing accommodation.
