In Brief

GIS is Chiang Mai's most affordable accredited international school and that is its main draw - ACSI-accredited, K-12, small community, and fees roughly a third of what you pay at Lanna or Prem. The Christian ethos is genuine and central, not background decoration; families who are comfortable with that get good value and a close school community.

GIS has operated in Hang Dong since 1999 under an Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) accreditation, making it the only Christian-ethos international school in Chiang Mai with a full K-12 pathway. At around 515 students, it is smaller than the established British and IB schools, and the fees are deliberately low - teachers raise their own financial support as part of a mission model, which means the school can charge THB 294,500 to 361,000 per year without a large capital fee attached.

Families describe a warm, welcoming community where children are known as individuals and the atmosphere is noticeably different from the larger international schools. Advanced Placement courses are available in the senior years, and the school reports strong special needs support provision. The student mix tilts towards missionary families, Korean families, and children of NGO workers - a different social cross-section from CMIS or Nakornpayap.

The Christian framework is present in daily assemblies, chapel, and school culture - not a light touch. Families of other faiths are admitted but should visit before enrolling to understand what this looks like in practice. No IB pathway exists, and the campus sits south of Hang Dong in Tambon Harn Kaew - roughly 20-25 minutes from central Chiang Mai.

What parents value
  • ACSI-accredited K-12 school with fees from THB 294,500 - the lowest annual tuition of any accredited international school in Chiang Mai. No large one-time capital fee published, which reduces the first-year outlay compared to most competitors.
  • Advanced Placement courses in senior school open US university applications directly. Strong special needs support noted by multiple families - worth asking about provision at a campus visit if this is relevant to your child.
  • Small school community (~515 students) where teachers and families know each other. Families consistently describe a welcoming environment and a school that responds to individual children rather than managing them as part of a larger cohort.
Points of consideration
  • Christian ethos is embedded across every part of the school day - assemblies, chapel, curriculum values. Families not looking for a faith school should visit before enquiring further; this is not incidental to the school's identity.
  • No IB pathway. Families planning applications to UK, European or Asian universities that do not recognise AP credentials should confirm exit pathways before committing. Ask for university placement data for the past two to three years.
  • Hang Dong location in Tambon Harn Kaew puts it south of the main Hang Dong cluster. Families in Nimman, the Old City or Mae Rim should map the commute against school hours before shortlisting - 20-25 minutes each way is realistic.
