In Brief

Hamelin-Laie suits families who specifically want a Nord Anglia school, need boarding, or are already based along the Maresme coast. If you're commuting from central Barcelona, it's a longer journey than most families expect - check the R1 Cercanias timetable before deciding.

Montgat is 20 minutes north of Barcelona Sants by the R1 Cercanias line, which sounds reasonable until you add school pickup times and the walk from the station. Around 80% of the student body is Spanish or Catalan national, which makes this a different proposition from the more internationally mixed schools in the city. Boarding is available for up to 45 students (ages 11-18), making it one of the few boarding options in the Barcelona area.

As part of Nord Anglia Education, Hamelin-Laie has access to collaborative programmes with the Royal Conservatory of Music, Juilliard, and MIT. The campus sits on the coast with outdoor facilities that urban Barcelona schools can't match. Fees include lunch from age 1 through to Year 11, which affects the real cost comparison - all-in, primary fees are competitive with the Pedralbes schools.

Leadership has been unsettled - the previous Executive Head left in October 2025. Some families on international forums noted English levels among some teaching staff and pressure on new students to adapt to Catalan quickly. Recent ISD parent reviews for 2025-2026 are positive. The school is worth visiting in person; the feel is quite different from the more cosmopolitan schools closer to central Barcelona.

What parents value
  • One of the only boarding options in the Barcelona area (up to 45 places, ages 11-18). Nord Anglia group with access to Juilliard, Royal Conservatory, and MIT programming.
  • Fees include lunch from Pre-Nursery through Secondary. Direct train access on the R1 Cercanias line, 20 minutes from Barcelona Sants.
Points of consideration
  • Around 80% local Spanish/Catalan student body - less internationally mixed than schools in the city centre. Families seeking a strongly international peer group should compare with Benjamin Franklin or Oak House.
  • Leadership transition ongoing since October 2025. Worth asking the admissions team about the current Head and school direction before committing.
