University Destinations from Mumbai

Where Mumbai international school graduates go: Ivy and Oxbridge from DAIS, Russell Group and US top-50 across the IB tier, IITs and Law Schools in parallel.

University Destinations from Mumbai

The brief

  • Dhirubhai Ambani is the country's standout, with Ivy League and Oxbridge offers in cohort-scale numbers. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Oxford and Cambridge feature year on year.
  • UK Russell Group is the deepest channel. Imperial, UCL, LSE, Warwick, King's, Edinburgh, Manchester and St Andrews repeat across DAIS, Cathedral, ASB, Aditya Birla, Ecole Mondiale, Oberoi, JBCN Parel and BD Somani.
  • US placement spreads wider than headlines suggest. Ivies anchor the top at DAIS and Aditya Birla; Boston University, NYU, USC, Carnegie Mellon, Northeastern and the UC system are the more common landings across the IB tier.
  • Canada and Australia run hot in the second band. Toronto, McGill, UBC and Waterloo appear repeatedly; Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW and Monash turn up across most lists.
  • India is a parallel track, not a fallback. IIT and BITS Pilani routes run through JEE, independent of curriculum. NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad and the National Law Schools draw IB and ISC graduates via CLAT. Ashoka, Symbiosis, FLAME, Manipal and Krea accept the IB Diploma at face value.

Mumbai is the deepest IB Diploma market in India and the city where overseas and Indian-premier pathways most clearly overlap inside the same school. DAIS finished 9th worldwide for IB DP in 2025, the only Indian school in the global top 10. Cathedral averaged 38.4 the same year, against a global IB DP average of 30.32.

The top IB cohorts read like a London or Hong Kong international school list: Ivy, Oxbridge, Russell Group, US top-50, Australian Go8. The same schools place at scale into Indian institutions the published lists rarely lead with: the IITs via JEE, BITS Pilani, the National Law Schools, Ashoka, FLAME. Most Mumbai families are choosing both lanes, not one.

Where Mumbai graduates go

Across published lists from the top eight schools, five regions repeat. The shape is consistent across the top tier; proportions tilt by school.

The United States is the largest single destination. The top of the list (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford) concentrates at DAIS, with Aditya Birla, Cathedral and ASB placing into the same names in smaller numbers. The wider band sits at NYU, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon, USC, Northeastern, Cornell and the UC system. Liberal arts colleges (Williams, Amherst, Pomona, Swarthmore) repeat across ASB and JBCN Parel lists.

The United Kingdom is the deepest channel by spread. Imperial, UCL, LSE and King's anchor every published Mumbai list. Oxford and Cambridge offers concentrate at DAIS and recur across Cathedral, Aditya Birla and Oberoi cohorts. The broader Russell Group, Warwick, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Durham, Nottingham, sits beneath that, with St Andrews appearing where families weigh US-style liberal arts against UK depth.

Canada is a structural pillar, not a backup. Toronto, McGill and UBC lead, with Waterloo for engineering and CS. The Canadian cycle opens earlier than the US and aid is more reliable.

Australia sits just below. Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, Monash, ANU are the Go8 names that recur, with Queensland, Adelaide and Auckland across western-suburb IB schools.

Asia and Europe carry meaningful counts. NUS and NTU in Singapore, HKU and HKUST in Hong Kong, NYU Abu Dhabi, Tokyo and Waseda. In Europe, Sciences Po, Bocconi, ETH Zurich, EPFL, Trinity College Dublin, plus English-medium liberal arts colleges in Amsterdam and Leiden.

India runs in parallel and is rarely the headline of a school's destination page. The IITs admit on JEE rank, independent of curriculum; the schools that place consistently leave room for the parallel JEE coaching track. Cathedral and DAIS via the ICSE stream are common starting points. The National Law Schools (NLSIU, NALSAR, NUJS, NLU Delhi) admit on CLAT and draw IB and ISC graduates from Cathedral, Aditya Birla and DAIS. Ashoka, FLAME, Krea, Symbiosis and Manipal accept the IB Diploma at face value.

Which schools place strongly where

The clearest published data sits at six schools.

Dhirubhai Ambani International School

BKC. 9th globally for IB DP in 2025. The most concentrated Ivy League plus Oxbridge pipeline in India: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL and LSE feature across recent cohorts. The school also places at scale into the IITs, BITS Pilani and Ashoka through the ICSE stream.

Cathedral and John Connon School

Fort. 38.4 IB DP average in 2025, with AP electives alongside the Diploma. The most genuinely cross-sector destinations footprint in the city: Indian premier institutions (IITs, BITS Pilani, NLSIU, Ashoka, Symbiosis) alongside US Ivies, Oxbridge and Russell Group. Alumni network reaches across the Tata group, the judiciary, global finance and academia.

American School of Bombay

BKC. IB DP with AP electives, American transcripts, dedicated counselling team. The clearest US-bound pathway in Mumbai. Recent cohorts place across the US (Ivy and top-25, liberal arts), UK (Oxbridge, Russell Group), Canada, Singapore and Australia. The cohort is the most internationally diverse in the city, so the destinations spread reflects passport mix as much as academic placement.

Ecole Mondiale World School

Juhu. 2024 IB DP average 38, *52% A/A at A-Level** the same year. CIS and NEASC accredited. Destinations span the US, UK, Canada, Singapore and Australia. The IB plus A-Level dual finish gives senior students two valid application stacks.

Oberoi International School

Goregaon East and JVLR. 2025 IB DP average 35.5, with the Class of 2025 carrying USD 8.1 million in scholarship offers. IB Preferred Partner running PYP through DP across two campuses. Destinations span US, UK, Canada, Australia and Europe.

JBCN International School (Parel)

Parel. The Class of 2025 earned over USD 13 million in university scholarships, on a 100% IGCSE pass rate. EducationWorld ranked the school No. 1 to 2 in Mumbai and No. 2 nationally in 2025. Destinations span US, UK, Canada and Asia, with weight on schools where merit aid is in play.

Three more publish enough to read. Aditya Birla World Academy (Tardeo) carries the Times No. 1 international curriculum ranking in Mumbai, with destinations across US Ivies, UK Russell Group, Go8 and leading Canadian universities. BD Somani (Cuffe Parade) is a smaller IGCSE plus IB DP school placing across the UK, US, Canada and Singapore. Jamnabai Narsee International (Vile Parle) ran a 2025 cohort of 100 IB candidates with a 34-point average and a 45/45 top score, with destinations across UK and US plus a long Indian tail through the ISC sister school.

How to read these destinations

A published destination list is a partial public record. It shows what the school chose to publish; it does not show what it did not.

Distribution beats highlights. A single Harvard or Oxford acceptance is a marketing line. A school placing ten students into the Russell Group every year, and another ten into US top-50, has built something institutional: a counsellor team that knows the cycle, alumni relationships, applicant track record. The middle 50% tells the story.

Counsellor depth scales with cohort. A premium Mumbai school runs three to six dedicated college counsellors for a cohort of 100 to 200, from Grade 9 through offer letters. A mid-tier school may have one counsellor across the whole secondary. The difference shows up in US applications first.

Curriculum maps loosely to region. IB DP travels best for US, UK and Australian routes. ICSE and ISC are the most direct path into Delhi University and Indian state universities. IIT entry runs through JEE, independent of school curriculum.

Scholarships are an outcome, not a target. The USD 8.1 million Oberoi and USD 13 million JBCN headlines combine offers across cohorts and include schools where merit aid is generous. The dollar figure is the sum of awards offered, not money in the family's pocket.

Indian destinations are under-published. Most Mumbai schools do not lead with the National Law Schools, the IITs or Ashoka even when they place graduates there.

FAQs

Which Mumbai school sends the most students to Ivy League and Oxbridge? DAIS. The 2025 IB DP cohort placed 9th globally and recent years have produced concentrated offers from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and LSE. Cathedral, Aditya Birla and ASB place into the same destinations in smaller numbers.

Where do most Mumbai IB graduates go for university? The US is the largest single destination, followed by the UK and Canada. Within the US, the top (Ivies, MIT, Stanford) concentrates at a handful of schools; the wider band sits at NYU, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon, USC, Northeastern and the UC system.

Do Mumbai international schools place students at the IITs and BITS Pilani? Yes, through the JEE parallel track rather than the IB Diploma alone. Cathedral and DAIS via the ICSE stream are common starting points. Consistent placement requires an Indian board alongside IB and senior-year room for the JEE coaching track.

Do Indian universities accept the IB Diploma? Yes. Delhi University, Ashoka, Symbiosis, FLAME, Manipal and Krea accept IB Diploma scores, usually converted to a percentage equivalent. National Law Schools admit on CLAT, which IB students sit alongside ISC and CBSE candidates.
