# Things to Do with Kids in Singapore
Singapore is engineered for family weekends. The MRT reaches most of the island and two clusters carry the heavy-lift days: Sentosa in the south for theme parks, beaches and aquariums, and Mandai in the north where the zoo, night safari, river park and bird park share one site. Around those anchors: Gardens by the Bay, Jewel Changi, three nature reserves, East Coast Park, and a short bumboat to Pulau Ubin that still reads as 1970s kampong Singapore.
Temperatures sit at 28 to 33C year-round with afternoon thunderstorms from October to March. Indoor air-con and water features run the operating system; a morning at Mandai followed by an afternoon at Snow City or Cloud Forest is the local rhythm.

Outdoor, parks and nature
East Coast Park is the default Saturday morning: a 15km coastal stretch with cycle paths, hawker centres and a steady family scene from 06:00. Bike rentals at Big Splash and Parkland Green run SGD 10 to 15 per hour. The Park Connector reaches Changi Beach or Bedok Reservoir without leaving a bike path.
Pasir Ris Park sits at the eastern tip. A 600m mangrove boardwalk delivers reliable mudskipper, monitor lizard and heron sightings; weekend pony rides and a large playground make it a destination.
MacRitchie Reservoir's TreeTop Walk is a 250m suspension bridge 25m above the canopy. The full loop is 11km, four to five hours, doable from age seven; a shorter 5km Petai loop works with under-fives. Free, opens 09:00. Long-tailed macaques are common; closed bags only. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is the steeper cousin: 1.4km up to the 163m summit through primary forest, best before 09:00.
Singapore Botanic Gardens is a UNESCO site, free. Jacob Ballas Children's Garden inside it is a 6-hectare fenced children's section with water play, treehouse and edible-plant trails (Tue to Sun 08:00 to 19:00). Coney Island, a 133-hectare wooded island connected by two bridges from Punggol Point, has beaches and a single resident brahmin cow; bring your own bike. Marina Barrage, a working dam with a grass rooftop, is among the best free kite-flying spots in the city.
Indoor and air-conditioned
When the 14:00 storm hits the city moves inside. Jewel Changi Airport leads. The HSBC Rain Vortex is the tallest indoor waterfall in the world at 40m, free to view, with hourly light shows from 19:30. Canopy Park is SGD 8.50; the Canopy Bridge plus Mirror Maze combo is SGD 27. Two hours in Canopy plus one in the Vortex atrium fills a storm-shelter afternoon.
ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands runs Future World, the teamLab digital exhibition where children touch walls and forest projections respond. SGD 22 adult, SGD 17 child, 90 minutes.
Science Centre Singapore at Jurong East holds a thousand exhibits across 14 galleries. Snow City (minus 5C slope, jacket and boots, SGD 18), the Omni-Theatre dome and KidsSTOP (under-8s, SGD 22) share the campus. Combo passes from SGD 30 per child.
HomeTeamNS Bedok Reservoir runs SuperPark (trampolines, climbing walls, pedal carts, SGD 25 to 35 per child); the Khatib branch carries a 3-storey AXTION climbing facility. Day rates; no membership. BOUNCE at Cathay Cineleisure and Katapult at SAFRA Yishun and Tampines run SGD 22 to 28 per child per hour.
Theme parks and water parks (Sentosa)
Universal Studios Singapore runs seven themed zones across 20 hectares: Sci-Fi City (Battlestar Galactica twin coasters), Ancient Egypt (Mummy indoor coaster), The Lost World (Jurassic rapids), Far Far Away and Madagascar. SGD 83 adult, SGD 62 child. Express Pass from SGD 50 moves you to the front of every queue on weekends.
S.E.A. Aquarium holds 100,000 marine animals across 50 habitats, anchored by a 36m open-ocean tank where manta rays, hammerhead sharks and bluefin tuna circle past floor-to-ceiling glass. SGD 44 adult, SGD 33 child. The USS plus S.E.A. Aquarium combo from SGD 99 is the simplest two-day Sentosa plan.
Adventure Cove Waterpark next door: lazy river, six water slides including the head-first Riptide Rocket, wave pool, snorkel reef tank with 20,000 fish. SGD 40 adult, SGD 32 child.
Three Sentosa beaches. Tanjong is the calmest. Palawan has the suspension bridge to the southernmost point of continental Asia and a pirate-ship playground. Siloso is the activity strip: MegaZip 450m zipline (SGD 60), iFly indoor skydiving (SGD 109 for two flights) and the Sensoryscape walking trail. Skyhelix Sentosa, a 79m rotating gondola, gives the highest open-air panorama on the island. SGD 22 adult.
Access: Sentosa Express from VivoCity SGD 4 return; the walking boardwalk is free; the cable car from Mount Faber (SGD 35 adult) is itself the activity.
Discovery and learning
Singapore Zoo's open-concept design is the regional benchmark: orangutans free-range overhead on rope bridges, white tigers in a moat-bordered habitat, the Fragile Forest walk-through aviary. The new Rainforest Wild ASIA section (2026) adds pre-historic and freshwater habitats. SGD 53 adult, SGD 38 child. A 09:00 start hits orangutan feeding at 10:00.
River Wonders next door runs by river ecosystem. The Giant Panda Forest holds Kai Kai and Jia Jia; the Amazon River Quest boat floats past jaguars and otters. SGD 43 adult, SGD 31 child.
Night Safari opens at 19:15. The 45-minute tram and four walking trails cover Asian elephants, leopards, Malayan tigers and a free-range bat habitat. From age six up. SGD 56 adult, SGD 39 child.
Bird Paradise replaced Jurong Bird Park in 2023: eight walk-through aviaries across 17 hectares, scheduled lorikeet feeding. SGD 49 adult, SGD 34 child.
Mandai logistics. Four parks share a car park and free internal shuttle. The Khatib shuttle runs every 15 minutes from Khatib MRT, SGD 1. 2-park combo from SGD 90, all-four-park pass SGD 178.
The downtown museum offer for hands-on weekends: National Gallery children's biennale (free under-6, SGD 25 adult), Asian Civilisations Museum weekend family programme (SGD 8 adult), and the National Museum of Singapore.
Free or low-cost picks
The free roster is unusually strong for a city this size:
- Gardens by the Bay outdoor (Supertree Grove, Bay East). Supertree light show 19:45 and 20:45 nightly.
- Marina Barrage rooftop and Sustainable Singapore Gallery.
- Botanic Gardens and Jacob Ballas Children's Garden (Tue to Sun).
- East Coast, Pasir Ris, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio, West Coast parks.
- MacRitchie TreeTop Walk and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.
- Coney Island, Changi Beach, Punggol Waterway.
- Jewel HSBC Rain Vortex, light show hourly from 19:30.
- Library@Harbourfront, library@orchard, Jurong Regional Children's Library.
The premium in Singapore is rent and school fees; daily family time runs cheap. A morning at MacRitchie, lunch at a hawker centre and an afternoon at East Coast Park is an SGD 30 family day for four.
Day trips
Pulau Ubin is the day trip. Bumboats from Changi Point Ferry Terminal leave when full (12 passengers), SGD 4 each way, 10 minutes. The island runs on diesel generators and has 30 permanent residents. Bike rental at the jetty is SGD 8 to 15 per day with child seats and tag-alongs. The Chek Jawa Wetlands boardwalk is a 1.1km loop through six ecosystems with a 20m viewing tower; visit at low tide. No ATMs; bring cash.
Legoland Malaysia in Johor Bahru delivers a theme park, water park and Sea Life aquarium for half the Universal Studios spend. Adult MYR 249, child MYR 199 (around SGD 75 / SGD 60) for the two-park combo. The Causeway Link CW3 or CW4 coach from Queen Street runs every 30 minutes; allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way at the border on weekends.
Bintan, Indonesia is the weekend reset: ferry from Tanah Merah to Lagoi Bay, 55 minutes, SGD 90 to 120 return.

FAQs
Is a Mandai family membership a fit? For two children and a six-month-plus stay, the Mandai Friends family pass (SGD 220 family of four) breaks even on three visits.
Best month for Mandai? Late June and July run drier than the November to January monsoon. Animals are most active 09:00 to 11:00.
How do families handle the heat? School weekdays end at the pool, not the playground. Saturday is the morning-out day (06:30 to 11:00, then air-con); Sunday is brunch and an indoor block. The November to January monsoon clears the indoor list.
Where do parents take visiting grandparents? Gardens by the Bay, then the Botanic Gardens, then a Mandai day.
KidZania Singapore? Closed permanently in June 2020. Closest substitute: KidsSTOP role-play, or Singapore Discovery Centre at Boon Lay.
