The brief

  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and British School Al Khubairat anchor the A-Level tier, with BSAK leading on results at *50 percent A\-A in 2025**.
  • Nord Anglia AD posts the city's strongest IB Diploma headline: 39.8 average in 2025, 24 percent above 40 points, the highest published in Abu Dhabi.
  • American Community School and GEMS American Academy lead the US pathway, both running a US diploma plus IB Diploma with GEMS American at 38 points in 2024.
  • Year 7 is the single biggest fee step in Abu Dhabi, often 25 to 40 percent above Year 6, and Year 12 lifts again into the high USD 20,000s at the top tier.
  • The exit decision is the school decision. Switching pathway at 14 or 16 is harder than switching school at 11. Pick the qualification first, then the campus.

The secondary market in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's secondary market is narrower than its primary market and the gaps between schools widen. ADEK rates every school on a five-point scale, Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak. The top tier clusters at Outstanding and Very Good; below that the published results thin out.

Three pathways dominate. A-Levels at the British schools after IGCSE. IB Diploma at the IB continuum schools and at most British and American schools too. AP plus a US diploma at the American schools, sometimes alongside the IB Diploma. Canadian, MoE and CBSE streams sit below this top three for outbound expat families.

Brighton College AD and BSAK lead on A-Levels. Brighton hit *44 percent A\-A in 2025, BSAK hit 50 percent. Cranleigh's first A-Level cohorts published 42 percent. Nord Anglia AD is the IB Diploma standout with a 39.8 average and 92 percent pass rate in 2025. GEMS American Academy posts 38 points** on the American platform.

The top tier

Brighton College Abu Dhabi

Brighton College Abu Dhabi runs the full British secondary pathway across Bloom Gardens and Khalifa City: Key Stage 3, IGCSE, A-Level. Bloom Gardens is the senior academic core. *A-Level A\-A reached 44 percent in 2025*, A\-B 68 percent, GCSE 9-7 at 72 percent. Senior fees climb to roughly USD 22,000 at Year 13. Sixth Form runs as its own school within the school, with a structured UCAS programme that approximates a UK senior college. BSO and COBIS accredited.

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island is the highest-fee secondary in the city, with Year 13 fees near USD 28,860. Senior class sizes hold below 22, the smallest cohort cap in the top tier. The senior school runs IGCSE then A-Level; first published A-Levels delivered *42 percent A\-A and IGCSE Grade 9 at 28 percent. ADEK and BSO both rate Cranleigh Outstanding.** The Surrey parent school's involvement carries into senior pastoral structure and the precision of the UCAS process. For a British senior pathway on Saadiyat, Cranleigh is the default; the fee gap to the next tier is real.

British School Al Khubairat

British School Al Khubairat is Abu Dhabi's oldest British school, founded in 1968, and the strongest A-Level performer in the city. *A-Level A\-A hit 50 percent in 2025, A\-B 72 percent. IGCSE 9-7 ran at 60 percent. Senior fees near USD 20,300 at Year 13, the most accessible top-tier price. BSO, COBIS and IBO accredited.* Sixth Form is small enough that subject choice matters; popular A-Level combinations run reliably, niche subjects depend on demand. The sibling-priority waitlist binds Years 7 to 9 hardest.

American Community School Abu Dhabi

American Community School Abu Dhabi is the American anchor in Abu Dhabi, founded in 1972. High school runs Grade 9 to Grade 12 on Saadiyat. The exit is a US high school diploma plus the IB Diploma, with AP available alongside. Grade 12 fees near USD 26,970. CIS, NEASC, MSA and IBO accredited. Recent published data shows 87 percent of leavers placed at a first-choice top-three university. The community is American-leaning and counsellors carry deep US college relationships, the directest line from Abu Dhabi to a US degree.

Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi

Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi on Al Reem Island runs secondary via IGCSE then IB Diploma. The 2025 IB results are the strongest published in the city: 39.8 average, 92 percent pass rate, 24 percent above 40 points. IGCSE A\*-C ran at 93 percent. Senior fees near USD 25,870. CIS, NEASC and ISI accredited. For families committed to IB from Year 7, Nord Anglia is the senior result to beat.

GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi

GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi in Khalifa City runs US diploma plus IB Diploma. IB Diploma 2024 average 38 points, the strongest American-platform IB result in the city. SAT average 655 per section. Grade 12 fees near USD 21,950. CIS and NEASC accredited. Bigger than ACS, the cohort more passport-mixed, the inland location working for families east of the Corniche. The dual-pathway flexibility, AP for US-leaning students, IB for the rest, gives Grade 11 students room to play to strengths.

Strong mid-tier

British International School Abu Dhabi

British International School Abu Dhabi, the larger Nord Anglia campus in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, runs IGCSE then IB Diploma. Senior fees near USD 20,950. 97 nationalities, around 2,200 students, staff retention 85 percent in 2025-26. A British secondary feel with an IB exit, the practical answer for families inland.

Bateen World Academy

Bateen World Academy in Al Manaseer runs the full IB continuum, with IB Diploma 2024 average 34.3 points and a 97 percent pass rate. Senior fees near USD 20,510. IBO accredited. Cohort around 1,030, smaller than Nord Anglia or GEMS, central location convenient for families living in the city.

GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi

GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi on Al Reem Island runs the full IB continuum with Diploma at the top. Senior fees near USD 20,120. ADEK rates the school Very Good. A through-IB option in a denser residential area than Bateen.

Yas American Academy

Yas American Academy on Yas Island runs American high school with AP. Senior fees near USD 18,740. NEASC accredited. Smaller and newer than ACS or GEMS American; TIMSS 2023 placed Grade 8 Math at 484 and Grade 8 Science at 491. AP runs in the main subjects; niche availability depends on demand.

Yasmina British Academy

Yasmina British Academy in Khalifa City is Aldar's largest school, around 3,600 students. Senior fees near USD 18,310. GCSE 2025 pass rate 85 percent, 13 percent at Grade 9, 43 percent at Grades 7-9. A-Level provision is established but the distribution sits behind Brighton, BSAK and Cranleigh. Large cohorts, broad co-curricular range, more setting in core subjects.

Canadian International School Abu Dhabi

Canadian International School Abu Dhabi in Mohammed Bin Zayed City runs a Canadian secondary stream to Grade 12, the only Canadian-curriculum senior school in the city. Senior fees near USD 14,100. Around 500 students. The natural pick for families returning to Canada; for other destinations the pathway needs more explaining to admissions offices than IB, A-Level or AP.

Abu Dhabi International School

Abu Dhabi International School in Khalifa City runs British secondary to A-Level. *A-Level 2025 pass rate 100 percent, A\-A 36 percent, A\-B 58 percent. Senior fees near USD 13,060. Founded 1992*. A credible British senior pathway below the top-tier fee bracket.

Best for A-Levels

A-Levels in Abu Dhabi typically run as three or four subjects studied in depth across Years 12 and 13, after IGCSEs in Years 10 and 11. The British schools offer the deepest A-Level provision; Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel and OCR all appear, with Cambridge dominant.

Best for IB DP

The IB Diploma is a six-subject programme plus the core, Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS, scored out of 45. The 2024 global average ran near 30 points with a 79 percent pass rate; anything above 34 is competitive, above 38 is the city's top tier.

Best for AP

Advanced Placement is subject-by-subject, scored 1 to 5, run by the College Board. Students choose AP courses individually rather than committing to a full diploma, which suits clear US-direction families and students with strong subject specialisms. AP runs primarily at the American schools in Abu Dhabi.

The age labels and exit points

Secondary covers roughly ages 11 to 18 across all three systems; the labels and exit points differ.

  • British schools run Year 7 to Year 13. Year 7 to Year 9 is Key Stage 3, Year 10 to Year 11 is Key Stage 4, ending in IGCSE at 16. Year 12 to Year 13 is Sixth Form, ending in A-Level at 18.
  • American schools run Grade 6 to Grade 12: middle school at Grades 6 to 8, high school at Grades 9 to 12. The exit is a US high school diploma, often with AP courses layered on top, and at ACS and GEMS American the IB Diploma as a parallel option.
  • IB continuum schools run MYP from 11 to 16 then Diploma from 16 to 18. MYP is criterion-referenced and internal; the Diploma is the externally examined exit.

The IB Diploma is the same qualification at every school that offers it. What differs is the preparation: IGCSE before IB at the British schools, MYP before IB at the IB continuum schools, an American middle school before IB at ACS and GEMS American.

Year 7 is the biggest single fee step in Abu Dhabi, often 25 to 40 percent above Year 6. Year 12 lifts again, with Sixth Form running 15 to 25 percent above Year 11. By Year 13, fees roughly double from Year 1.

How to choose between them

Three filters narrow the shortlist faster than touring six schools.

Filter one: the exit qualification. A-Level, IB Diploma, or AP plus US diploma. A-Levels suit students with clear subject specialisms and a UK or Commonwealth destination. IB Diploma suits structured breadth and an international destination. AP plus US diploma is the directest line to a US university. Switching pathway at Year 10 or Grade 9 is harder than switching school at Year 7 or Grade 6.

Filter two: results, not brochures. Brighton, BSAK, Cranleigh, Nord Anglia and GEMS American all publish detailed annual results. Compare the headline, the distribution and the cohort size. A 39.8 IB average from 60 students carries more signal than the same number from 12.

Filter three: where you live. Saadiyat anchors Cranleigh and ACS. Al Reem anchors Nord Anglia and GEMS World Academy. Khalifa City anchors Brighton (Khalifa), Yasmina and GEMS American. Al Mushrif anchors BSAK. Mohammed Bin Zayed City anchors BIS and Canadian International. The morning commute with a fifteen-year-old, on no sleep before mocks, decides as much as the published results.

FAQs

Which Abu Dhabi school is best for A-Levels? On 2025 results, *BSAK at 50 percent A\-A**. Brighton College Abu Dhabi at 44 percent and Cranleigh at 42 percent sit close behind. The choice between them turns on campus, cohort size and subject combinations as much as the headline percentage.

Which Abu Dhabi school is best for the IB Diploma? Nord Anglia Abu Dhabi on 2025: 39.8 average, 92 percent pass rate, 24 percent above 40 points. GEMS American Academy at 38 is the strongest American-platform IB result; Bateen at 34.3 with a 97 percent pass rate is the strongest full IB continuum option.

Which school is best for US university admissions? American Community School Abu Dhabi. US diploma plus IB Diploma, AP available, NEASC and MSA accredited, counsellors with established US college relationships. GEMS American Academy is the second route. Other schools place students at US universities via the IB Diploma; the pathway is most direct at ACS.

Can my child switch from a British school to an IB school at Year 12? Yes. The IGCSE-to-IB Diploma transition is common in Abu Dhabi: BIS, Bateen and Nord Anglia all take students from BSAK, Brighton or Cranleigh into Year 12. Plan the move by Year 10 so subject options align.

When should I apply for Year 7 or Grade 9? Twelve to eighteen months ahead for Cranleigh, Brighton, BSAK, ACS and Nord Anglia. Year 7 is the tightest external-entry point because most places go to Year 6 internal progressions. Mid-year places are rare in Years 7 to 9 at the top tier, more common in Year 10 as families relocate.

Do all top secondary schools offer the same A-Level subjects? No. Brighton, BSAK and Cranleigh run the popular core, Maths, Further Maths, English Literature, Sciences, History, Economics, reliably. Niche subjects, Mandarin, Music Technology, Politics, Psychology, depend on annual demand and may not run if fewer than six students choose them. Check the actual subject list for the current cohort, not the prospectus.
