Best Schools for University Placement in Mumbai
Where Mumbai's strongest IB schools send graduates: Ivy and Oxbridge from DAIS and Cathedral, IIT and BITS routes, US and UK destinations across the BKC tier.
The brief
- Dhirubhai Ambani is the only Indian school inside the global IB DP top 10 in 2025 and the city's most concentrated route to Ivy League and Oxbridge offers. The constraint is admission, not placement.
- Cathedral and John Connon runs a dual ISC plus IB DP senior school and feeds Indian premier institutions (IITs, BITS Pilani) alongside US and UK universities. The alumni footprint is genuinely cross-sector.
- American School of Bombay is the city's clearest US-bound pathway: American transcripts, AP availability inside an IB DP school, full-time college counselling team. Senior-year fees sit at INR 31 lakh.
- Ecole Mondiale, Aditya Birla and Oberoi publish credible destination lists across US, UK, Canada, Australia and Europe. Oberoi's Class of 2025 carried USD 8.1 million in scholarship offers.
- Counselling depth is the variable parents underestimate. The top tier runs dedicated counselling teams from Grade 9 or 10. Below that, one counsellor often covers the whole secondary school and outcomes depend more on what the family does outside the building.
Mumbai is the deepest IB Diploma market in India and the city where Indian-premier and overseas pathways most clearly overlap inside the same schools. DAIS finished 9th worldwide for IB DP in 2025. Cathedral averaged 38.4 the same year. The 2024 global IB DP average was 30.32.
The split that shapes choice is destination, not curriculum. Families optimising for the IITs, BITS Pilani and Ashoka want a school strong in JEE preparation alongside ICSE or ISC, or a clear track record placing IB graduates into Indian premier universities. Families optimising for US and UK want structured counselling from Year 9, published destination lists, and either AP availability (US) or strong IGCSE plus DP results (UK).
How to read this list
Published destinations beat marketing. DAIS, Cathedral, Ecole Mondiale, ASB, Aditya Birla and Oberoi publish year-by-year lists. Several do not, which shifts the burden onto admissions conversations.
Counsellor depth scales with cohort. A premium Mumbai school runs three to six dedicated college counsellors for a cohort of 100 to 200, from Grade 9 through offer letters. A mid-tier school may have one counsellor across the whole secondary school.
Curriculum maps loosely to region. IB DP travels best for US, UK and Australian routes. ICSE and ISC are the most direct path into Delhi University, Symbiosis, FLAME and Indian state universities. IIT entry runs through JEE, independent of school curriculum; what matters is whether senior years leave time for the parallel coaching track most JEE candidates run.
The standout
Dhirubhai Ambani International School

Bandra Kurla Complex. Ages 4 to 18. ICSE plus IGCSE plus IB DP. CIS and NEASC accredited. Around 2,800 pupils. Founded 2003.
DAIS placed 9th globally for IB DP in 2025, the only Indian school in the world top 10, with perfect 45-point scores recurring year on year. The destinations list is the most concentrated Ivy League plus Oxbridge pipeline in the country: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and LSE all feature across recent cohorts. The school also feeds the IITs, BITS Pilani and Ashoka at scale through the parallel ICSE stream.
College counselling is embedded from Grade 9 and runs alongside subject teaching through the Diploma. Mumbai parents repeatedly group DAIS, Oberoi and Aditya Birla as the schools where Ivy League selections concentrate in India. Admissions are the most competitive in the city. Published senior-year fees of around INR 10 lakh sit well below ASB and Aditya Birla; the waitlist, not the price tag, decides who attends.
The next tier
Cathedral and John Connon School

Fort, South Mumbai. Ages 3 to 18. ICSE, ISC and IB DP, with AP electives. CIS accredited. Around 1,200 pupils. Founded 1860.
Cathedral is the oldest school in this group by more than a century and the most reputationally entrenched in the city. The senior school splits into ISC and IB DP streams, with AP electives sitting alongside the Diploma for US-bound students. The DP cohort averaged 38.4 in 2025 and 38.48 in 2022, a band held across at least four cohorts.
The destinations footprint is genuinely mixed: Indian premier institutions (IITs, BITS Pilani, NLS Bangalore, Ashoka, Symbiosis) alongside US Ivies, Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. The alumni network reaches across the Tata group boardrooms, the judiciary and global finance. The dual-track senior design lets a family pick the system that suits each child rather than committing the cohort to one pathway. Fort location is prized for prestige and harder to reach from anywhere north of Lower Parel.
American School of Bombay

Bandra Kurla Complex. Ages 3 to 18. American Common Core plus IB DP plus PYP. CIS accredited. Around 1,300 pupils. Founded 1981.
ASB is the clearest US-bound pathway in Mumbai. The school issues American transcripts, runs IB DP in the senior years with AP electives available, and maintains a dedicated college counselling team working exclusively on university placement. Recent cohorts have placed graduates across the US (Ivy and top-25 universities, liberal arts colleges), UK (Oxbridge, Russell Group), Canada (McGill, Toronto), Singapore (NUS, NTU) and Australia.
The cohort is the most internationally diverse in the city: roughly a quarter US passport holders, 10 to 15 percent Indian, the rest third-country nationals. IB DP 2024 average 34, highest individual score 41. Around 80 percent of grade-12 students sat the full Diploma; the rest took DP courses, normal in American-curriculum IB schools and one reason the cohort average reads lower than peer DP-only schools. Senior-year fees of INR 31 lakh are the highest in the city by a margin.
Aditya Birla World Academy

Tardeo, South Mumbai. Ages 2 to 18. ICSE plus IGCSE plus IB DP plus A-Level. CIS accredited. Around 800 pupils. Founded 2008.
ABWA is the South Mumbai flagship of the Aditya Birla Education Trust, chaired by Neerja Birla. The school runs ICSE through Year 10, IGCSE alongside it, then IB Diploma plus A-Levels in the senior years. The dual senior finish preserves both UK A-Level routes and the IB DP path without committing the family at 14. The Times School Survey ranks ABWA the No. 1 international curriculum school in Mumbai.
Mumbai parents group ABWA, Cathedral, DAIS and Oberoi as the schools where US Ivy selections concentrate. The destinations list spans US Ivies, UK Russell Group, Australian Go8 and leading Canadian universities, with counselling that includes psychological and wellbeing support through Diploma year. Recurring grumbles in parent threads concern teacher turnover; placement outcomes have been consistent across recent cohorts.
Ecole Mondiale World School

Juhu, Western Suburbs. Ages 3 to 18. Full IB continuum (PYP, MYP, DP) plus A-Levels. CIS and NEASC accredited. Around 600 pupils. Founded 2004.
Ecole Mondiale is Mumbai's first full-continuum IB school and the western-suburbs option families pick for university placement out of the Diploma. The 2024 DP cohort averaged 38 points, with *52% A/A at A-Level the same year. Dual CIS and NEASC accreditation. Destinations span US, UK, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia**; the IB plus A-Level dual finish gives senior students two valid application stacks depending on target.
The school is small by Mumbai standards: close pastoral access, counsellor-to-student ratios that favour individual attention through Diploma year, narrower HL breadth than Oberoi or DAIS. Juhu works for Bandra, Khar, Andheri and Versova; less practical from South Mumbai or the eastern suburbs.
Oberoi International School

Goregaon East and a JVLR campus. Ages 3 to 18. Full IB continuum. CIS and NEASC accredited. Around 2,900 pupils. Founded 2008.
Oberoi is the largest IB-only school in Mumbai and the most prolific source of published university scholarship offers in the city. The Class of 2025 carried USD 8.1 million in scholarships. IB DP 2025 average 35.5 against a global average of 30.58. An IB Preferred Partner running PYP through DP across two campuses.
Cohort size lifts HL breadth and the destinations list across US, UK, Canada, Australia and Europe. Some senior students post that recent cohorts have not had the same teaching as earlier years and that academic pressure can be relentless. Fees sit among the highest in the city.
JBCN International School (Parel)

Parel, Central Mumbai. Ages 3 to 18. Full IB continuum plus Cambridge IGCSE. CIS accredited. Around 700 pupils. Founded 2011.
JBCN Parel is the academic flagship of the JBCN group and an outlier on scholarship outcomes. The Class of 2025 earned over USD 13 million in university scholarships, on a 100% IGCSE pass rate and Diploma averages around 37.4 across the Parel and Oshiwara campuses. EducationWorld ranked the school No. 1 to 2 in Mumbai and No. 2 nationally in 2025. Destinations span US, UK, Canada and Asia, with weight on schools where merit aid is in play.
Parel is reachable from both South Mumbai and the western suburbs, giving the school a wider catchment than most. The chain runs other campuses in Borivali and Oshiwara; Parel is the DP flagship.

What to watch for
A school can publish strong DP averages and still place a cohort thinly if the counselling team is undersized or arrives late. Five questions do real work in admissions conversations.
When does college counselling start? Best practice in this tier is Grade 9 or Year 10. A school that begins in Year 12 is structurally late: by then the academic profile is mostly set and the time for activity, leadership and standardised-test prep has narrowed.
How many dedicated counsellors serve the graduating cohort? A team of three to six for a cohort of 100 to 200 is strong. One counsellor across the whole secondary school is undersized.
Where is the full destination list for the last three years? Highlights mask consistency. The full list shows breadth, how the long tail performs, and whether the school places at scale into target regions or has a few headline names that recur.
Which application systems is the team strongest in? US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and India all run on different timelines and different application logics; few teams are equally strong across all six.
Are JEE candidates supported inside the school day? For families targeting the IITs, the JEE coaching track runs in parallel to school. A school that recognises this and structures the senior years around it gives the family more useful time.

FAQs
Which Mumbai school sends the most students to Ivy League and Oxbridge? Dhirubhai Ambani International School. The 2025 IB DP cohort placed in the global top 10 and recent years have produced concentrated offers from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and LSE. Cathedral, Aditya Birla and ASB place into the same destinations in most years, in smaller numbers.
Which school is best for families targeting US universities? The American School of Bombay is the most structurally aligned. American transcripts, IB DP with AP electives, a dedicated college counselling team and the most internationally diverse cohort in the city. Cathedral is the strongest South Mumbai alternative, with AP electives running alongside its IB DP stream.
Which school is best for the IITs and BITS Pilani? The IITs admit on JEE results, which run largely independent of school curriculum. The schools that place most consistently into the IITs and BITS run ICSE or ISC alongside IB DP and leave room for the parallel JEE coaching track families typically use. Cathedral and DAIS through the ICSE stream are common starting points.
Do Indian universities accept the IB Diploma? Yes. Delhi University, Ashoka, Symbiosis, FLAME, Manipal and others accept IB Diploma scores, usually converted to a percentage equivalent. Some convert generously, others less so. Most Mumbai IB graduates apply abroad where the Diploma is recognised at face value.
Does CIS or NEASC accreditation affect university outcomes? Universities assess the qualification, not the accreditation. CIS and NEASC signal governance and learning audit, and provide a recognised reference point for US transcript validation. Among Mumbai's top placement schools, CIS is the common thread; NEASC sits alongside it at DAIS, Ecole Mondiale and Oberoi.
