A historic IB day and boarding school on the Zugerberg above Zug, founded 1926, mixing Swiss families with around fifty international nationalities and offering the IB Diploma alongside IGCSE.

Institut Montana sits on a mountain overlooking Zug and its lake, with around 380 students of whom roughly a third to a half board from age 10 upward. The school has been an IB World School since 1987 and runs IGCSE through to the IB Diploma. 2025 results showed a 99 percent IB pass rate at an average of 32. Around a quarter of families are Swiss and the rest are drawn from across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The site is the obvious selling point. The campus is dramatic and outdoor activities are extensive, which suits families wanting a boarding option or a quieter alternative to a city school. Parents describe close communication between teachers, boarding staff and home, and small classes with a holistic feel. Families typically choose it for the boarding option or the lifestyle as much as the academics.

  • One alumnus credits the school with shaping discipline and respect during three years of boarding; teachers described as mentors who also play a role in upbringing.
  • Visitors and local commenters point to the hilltop location and the small, mixed-nationality cohort as defining features.
  • Online discussion is mostly factual and limited; little independent parent debate beyond the school's own marketing channels.
