In brief
An IB PYP boutique school in Hachioji running kindergarten through high school for families in west Tokyo who want a small, bilingual setting outside the central expat clusters.
TWIS opened in April 2010 in Hachioji and now spans early childhood through a high school division. The PYP authorisation covers ages 2 to 11, with elementary classes capped around 18 students and middle school groups up to 10. The high school combines on-campus learning with online US and Japanese curricula, allowing students to graduate with both Japanese and American diplomas. School buses run from Hachioji, Machida, Akishima, Yokota Air Base and Tamagawa Josui.
The fit here is families in west Tokyo or near Yokota who want bilingual immersion and small classes rather than the scale of the central international names. Returnee Japanese families, mixed households and US military households all show up. The trade-off is a hybrid high school model that depends on student self-direction, and a location that does not work for anyone living in central or east Tokyo. Cost runs notably below the central names.
Reviews
- Student-side signal is positive about approachable teachers, bright classrooms, small classes, school buses, and a multicultural student body.
- The main caution is staff-side: teacher reviews repeatedly flag management, pay, turnover, and workplace culture.
- The overall picture is polarised, with warm student experience comments sitting beside serious employee concerns.
