Reviews
- HJIS is one of a small handful of full IB World Schools in Yokohama, authorised for PYP, MYP and DP. Reviewers and r/Internationalteachers commenters consistently treat it as a real IB option for families who cannot place at YIS or Saint Maur.
- Parent reviews on directory sites are short but consistent. One parent said the staff were always helpful and that their child had made great progress; another described it as a fantastic small school where teachers care about students and bullying is uncommon.
- The school is small. Reddit applicants describe the MAPS testing list showing only a few names and treat HJIS as a backup to Yokohama International School. Cohort size is a feature, not a bug, but sets the ceiling on peer breadth.
- Glassdoor staff reviews are mixed. Around 87 per cent recommend the school, citing the IB programme breadth, friendly community and professional development. Negative reviewers cite low pay versus other Japan internationals, role-stacking, and weak support for social-emotional learning despite IB status.
- Some former staff reviewers say the leadership did not handle departures gracefully. Those critiques sit alongside parents who describe a friendly, supportive environment, so families should weigh the staff side as job-search caveat rather than parent-facing red flag.
- Tuition sits below the top Yokohama and Tokyo peers, which is a recurring draw in the public pool.
