A long-established American-curriculum school with a Lutheran Christian identity, sitting at the heart of the Jinqiao expat enclave in Pudong.

Concordia opened in 1998 and runs PK to Grade 12 on a single campus at 345 Huangyang Road in Jinqiao, the Pudong expat hub also known as Green City. Around 1,200 students follow an American programme with a wide AP slate and electives like social entrepreneurship and aerospace engineering. WASC accredited, Eric Semler heads as principal. The school is part of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod network, religion is taught every year, and the Christian framing is real rather than nominal.

Families who choose Concordia praise the supportive teachers, the holistic approach and the walk-to-school convenience for Jinqiao residents. The recurring complaints are that the campus and ECA range feel modest next to SAS Pudong for the price, and that recent grading-policy changes at high school have been handled with limited consultation. The natural shortlist for American-track Pudong families is Concordia, SAS Pudong and Dulwich Pudong.

  • Concordia Shanghai is consistently grouped with Shanghai American School at the top of the city's international market. One parent said "Concordia or SAS because they're the only T1s worth talking about in Shanghai."
  • The Lutheran character is the most-discussed cultural feature. Bible verses in classrooms, weekly religion or "spiritual studies", and Christian-only faculty hiring all surface repeatedly. One teacher applicant said they "couldn't take the bible thumping" and declined to interview.
  • Another applicant wrote that Concordia "doesn't hire divorced people or gays" as faculty, reflecting how applicants describe the hiring posture.
  • Student-side criticism is harder but specific. One ex-student described the school as "under extreme elitist and snitch-culture that does not support emotional or psychological growth of a student".
  • Pudong location in Jinqiao is praised as a walk-to-school expat enclave; the campus is described as well-resourced with strong North-American university outcomes.
  • Compensation sits at or near the top of the China market, and turnover is described as low. Parents looking for a non-religious or lower-fee option weigh that against reviewers calling it pricey relative to alternatives.

Positives

  • Tier 1 reputation. Consistently named one of Shanghai's two top international schools alongside SAS
  • Campus and location. Pudong Jinqiao location is praised as a walkable expat enclave with strong facilities

Considerations

  • Religious culture. Lutheran tone is pervasive; daily religion classes and Bible verses in classrooms are valued by Christian families and a deal-breaker for others
  • Hiring posture. Forum posters describe Christian-only faculty hiring and a stance reviewers describe as excluding divorced or LGBT teachers
  • Student culture. Quora and forum voices describe high-pressure, elitist and snitch-culture aspects alongside strong academics and college outcomes
  • Fees and value. Premium pricing widely accepted but some reviewers feel better-value premium options exist in Shanghai
